...having kept tabs for the past couple of weeks on the *Black Market*, I see that 2 oz tins of Penzance are NOT selling at 65.00 - 75.00 per. I am not buying at that price myself.
Perhaps we have reached a plateau... or come to our senses.

A great amount selling at these prices has been bound for foreign shores but it does appear to be at a saturation point at that level. At some point there has to be some price relief here; however, I still expect demand to remain relatively strong as long as world economic indicators remain same.

The market is small and easily saturated. Over the last 4 years I've sold a few dozen tins and bags of Penzance but it's just been a tin here and there at top dollar to US buyers. I've never sold any to Chinese or Russian mail drops. All the overseas buyers wanted from me was Murray era Dunhill.

I recently sold more Esoterica than that in one box to an individual who specifically informed me he was primarily in the market wrangling for foreign interests. We obviously travel in different circles.

Perhaps we have reached a plateau... or come to our senses. One would hope, but it's really hard to know. The aftermarket for unobtainium is still a fairly new phenomenon. Considering that some 2 oz tins have gone for more than $200 apiece, who knows where the edge of sanity really lies. The Motzek Strang for which I paid about $16-$17 bucks per 100 gram rope I could sell for nearly 10 times that amount. But I didn't buy it to gouge the life savings out of some poor obsessed mentally unbalanced clearly overpaid addict with a healthy bank account. I bought it to smoke and enjoy. But isn't it wrong not to strip my fellows of every last cent that they possess? Isn't that the ultimate meaning of life? Kind of takes some of the pleasure out of having the stuff around.

My upper stratosphere limit for tobacco purchase is Condor at EU prices or Curly block at $75.00 for 8 oz.....not because that is all I can afford, but because the way I see it, be it pipes or tobacco, there is a point of diminishing returns and beyond that at least in my opinion, things get silly.

It'll be nice to learn how the resellers self-regulate: maybe they unload quickly figuring its entering a bear market, they temporarly suspends sales in order to prop-up the price, or they start investing in expanding into new markets? Exciting times!

I watch the prices of Esoterica fluctuate on eBay, too. I've noticed that Penzance and Stonehaven current production 8 oz bags routinely reach $200+. And, I'm always surprised...but less so these days. Through good luck and good relationships, I've been able to pick up several pounds of both Penzance and Stonehaven for my cellar. These two blends are among my favorites - in my opinion, there is really nothing like them on the market. I also pick up the "lesser" Esoterica blends at MSRP when possible. I sometimes trade these away for other harder-to-finds.

Exciting times! I suspect all of those factors, as well as others, are always in play. I agree it’s a limited market; however, as long as product is insufficient to satisfy demand, opportunities abound across the board.

I've seen some stratosphere level pricing on the newer Germain releases via Ebay. Club Mixture, Century and Old Bridge. $60 per tin is high for a blend that has unlikely been sampled yet for some of these buyers.

I wonder what the demographics are for the people doing all this flipping? I don't see people of my age group(60) running around to b/m's and then to the post office. I would think it is people in their 20's-30's maybe?

Fortunately it's out there, at the B&M's, if you happen to happen upon it.
I think I've posted previously, that back before Christmas I was trying to fill the One last hole I had in my Esoterica Shelf... St. Ives.
Anywhoo, one afternoon, back in either November or December, I was dialing around, using the B&M list on Pipesmagazine.com and stumbled across a store about an hour from here that didn't have St. Ives but had an 8 oz bag of Stonehaven. After shipping I picked it up for less than $50.
Experienced the same thing with an 8 oz bag of Penzance a week later.
I've also put out WTB / WTT posts on various other Pipe Forums and have picked up some really nice blends at fair prices.
Just takes a little effort.

I don't mind making a trade for some Penzance, as I just did. But, both parties got what they wanted. I wanted a little and the "seller" wanted something I had that I have too much of anyhow. So, hopefully, everyone was happy...I know I am.
WOW, over 500 post...I must like it here. I have only 400+ at the "other" pipe forum and I've been a member since 2013.
