I tend to smoke lighter to medium blends, but not really a great fan of the full-aromatics and/or OTC "codger mixes". When reading through many reviews that discuss the older, traditional aromatics, match-blends of OTC aros, etc. almost always mentioned are phrases like "overly cased with sweet vanilla, caramel"....."too wet"....heavy handed with PG"....tobacco will not dry out"....etc. etc.
The PG used as a humectant, is said to have an "off-taste" and can be overly sweet, thus, ruining the blend-in-question.
I have no idea just what PG might taste like when used in a pipe tobacco? How can I detect if too much has been added. I mainly smoke Lane Ltd HGL/RLP-6, and I am sure some PG has been added, but how much?
I want to intentionally smoke some samples of tobacco blends that are overly sweetened with PG, for contrast, and to train myself to detect the heavy handed use of PG. Can you help me and suggest some blends that are spoiled by too much PG, so I can try some. Help me tune up my "PG detector".
Thanks for any help at all.

Most of the drugstore and bulk aro's are cheap green river burley that has had the life cooked out of it and then soaked in flavorings and humectants to keep them fresh. I'm not sure if PG has a sweet taste or if that comes from the casing. Usually you can see PG on the leaf, it looks like a shiny gel coating. BAC and 1Q do and I assume HGL and RLP-6 have this look and will not dry out very fast. I've found PG soaked tobacco like the Frog series seem to smolder and not burn down.

The sweetness is most likely from the casings and/or toppings. PG does leave a slightly sweet aftertaste when used in heavy amounts. One way that you can tell when it's present in a heavy application is the spongy gluey feeling that your tobacco will have. It will never, never, never dry out. It will be like the undead.

Thank you, gentlemen, for your answers. That's exactly why I asked. I knew you'd help.
Now, please recommend a few mild-medium mixtures that are not soaked in PG.
