Darin , that sounds like fun, well for the most part. My older brother gave me a bottle of Bourbon on Monday. He almost always brings a batch of something he was given. This was Minnesota Small Batch at 90 proof. Well, I had to try it. Really good stuff, and labeled Bourbon, not just Whiskey. Not enough to drive me away from Kentucky Whiskey, but it will get an occasional pull. My old friend, Elmer, whom I mentioned in another thread, would sit with me and share a bottle and ask for a "pull." I received my Iwan Reis package today with their custom blends. Already had one and will post some notes later for the Chroniclers. Bully the Lionhearted tried to grab my cache, so he got booted from the room. For antb Legend Lover zambini Stanhill and of course all the rest of the USA Chroniclers and Internationals I may have missed... I hope your weekends are blessed. I hope you all get moments (many) of the peace that I have here and there... and make good use of them. Between USA and Points Distant my mind gets boggled and pleased at the same time for all of you wonderful people. @10furlongs I hope you'll share how the k-9 situation is going. Lady Margaret I am not sure how Darin got that picture of me, but since I am now "outed" just enjoy Ronv69 thanks for sharing personal thoughts. We all benefit when a brother shares Scott W I think you're almost ready to take that trip to Zeta Reticuli. See the above pic that Darin took of me. That's what our spacesuits look like

Chronicle Expose of Iwan Reis Codger BlendsI started today with Old Colonial: Not listed in the ingredients, but in the description are Latakia and Perique, also vanilla. This tobacco starts out full of pop and fizz. It's not overly done on anything, but the flavors haven't really melded. This is actually a good thing as you get to taste them all separately. A third of the way down it seems to tame a little, BUT it never loses it's flavor. Not a bad Nic Hit. You might consider this an all day smoke if you are the type of person who likes waking up in a hotel room where construction is being done. I'll give it 4 of 5 stars (my system). It's in between and many other tobaccos fight for the top, so I would only recommend bulk in one instance... you really like a different take on your tobacco. I smoked it in a Devil Anse Cutty Cob Next up was Ko-Ko: Strictly Burley and Latakia. Iwan usually puts Lat and Per in his blends, it seems. I don't have any blends that I know of that are Burley and Lat alone. Okay, this, like the above review, was a different kick altogether. If you like Five Brothers or SWR this might be to your liking. What I got out of this, and it lost no flavor down the chute either, was rye bread. Toasted, maybe blackened edges. Full flavor with Nic Hit not bad. I really only rate Nic if it is really heavy or totally non existent. I smoked this in a rare bird for a Mr. Brog. A smaller bent pot made of oak. Great smoker. Oh, this one burned very well. Again, I note it as I notice it. If I don't notice something that does not mean it's not there. 4.5 stars for sheer difference sake. Before I do my third review, let me splain. This is one occasion, though I have read reviews, I really didn't remember anything about them. All tobacco starts out at 3 stars. It really has to pee me off to get below that. I have few really negative experiences with tobacco. Xuan has more negative than I do, but hey, that's what frying pan bruises are for. Sail Yellow was a recent less than 3. I thought it being a Euro Cavendish I would like it. Neither of us liked it and Bully the Lionhearted's farts were more popular that day. A good example of a down the middle 3 would be Daughter and Ryan Two Timer. All Burley, but it didn't have the heft of Five Brothers so the rating just stood there. Last one is Dr. Bradley: I know now that Sutliff produces these blends, even though they are old formulas. That's a good thing. As mentioned, then I have to say that I believe Sutliff/IR does the E. Hoffman Blends and now I am betting the older reviewers were right that Whitehall Black Tie is Sutliff. What isn't anymore? Maybe Dr. Bradly is similar to Country Doctor, a codger that Sutliff matched for a while. This blend had all the components I expect from Iwan, VA, Bur, Per, Lat, Orient. Instead (again) of a melded blend think Omelet. All of the fixings are there, doing their thing, puff after puff. Yet another IR Blend that does not lose its flavor. You get it all in varying degrees. Maybe this puff has more Lat. The next one you get the Per. But it all fits like an intricate puzzle. JimInks The Man From INKS rates blends within their genre, so I will do this here. I give it a 5 of 5 for codgers. It could be an all day smoke, but I think you would be tempted at some point to throw in an aro or burley blend. Iwan's prices on these are very reasonable. I would make two suggestions for bulk: Ko-Ko if that sounds good, knowing it's a rare breed. Dr. Bradley for something you would go to quite often. Old Colonial would be worth an occasional pouch, but it is not the star of this review. I have two more IR blends to get to in the near future, but please remember. Edit- forgot to mention this was smoked in the Moonshine Devil Anse from Darin . This is a beautiful thing for an old hillbilly like me This is Hush Hush, Definitely Down Low, on the QT, and Strictly Confidential

Last day and a half the RA pain did me in, though I manged to get all the Iwan Reis blends that I had smoked and thunked about. So we begin: Chronicle Expose of Iwan Reis Blends Part 2 - The Tobacco Strikes BackIntroductory note: zambini don't purchase Dr. Bradley first until you finish reading this article IR Private Label: I have to give the rating before all else, as I am so amazed. This is a 3 Star of 5 blend. It did absolutely nothing. It was the second bowl for the day, so I know my taste buds were not off. Next review will show this. It was almost like puffing steam. It came somewhat dry, and maybe that is it, but even if rolled into a cig it would be like Carlton's, if you remember those, the lowest tar and nic on the market. No top flavor. Burley, Lat, Per, Black Cav. Nothing. No spice. I may have to revisit this after hydrating a little. Could be an all day non-smoke. Coarse Cut. Smoked in Devil Anse Cob International Blend: This one almost didn't make the purchase. I love labels. The label didn't impress me. Ribbon Cut. Burley, Virginia, Latakia, Perique, Oriental . Now for the key info here. As Dr. Bradley is a blend where all the players have their spot, this wonderful tobacco is blended so well that it has a constant flavor, and though again the Per and Lat are sort of toppings, there is something else there. Private Label could not lose flavor it didn't have. International kept all the flavor going down my Brog Oak Chamber. Think of a piano chord where you get the chord sound but not the individual notes. You get a creamy English type flavor, not too strong, but full bodied. While I am certainly going to pick up ab 8 oz bag of Bradley, I will do the same for this 5 Star Blend. I may have to put together a wrestling cage match between Distinguished Gentleman and International Blend. Whether this is for you, I dunno. Full, but light, creamy flavor. The spice notes are blended in to the other tobaccos to create One Flavor to Rule them All. Won't be catching up on threads until the morrow or later, but I felt the need to keep the Chroniclers informed. edit- Were some of this tobacco to find it's way to Ireland, Legend Lover wouldst enjoy this with a Guinness Draft, complimenting creaminess with creaminess. Just remember, this is Hush Hush, Definitely Down Low, on the QT, and Strictly Confidential

zambini - taking a breather from my criminal studies to post this. I compared Iwan Reis's Dr. Bradley's Mixture to International Blend. I have since had several bowls of DrB. You really can't go wrong with either one. Bradley's, IMO, is just a tad spicier. The pipe makes a little difference, not a lot. I think (as I mentioned before) that what you have been smoking earlier in the day makes a difference on how you feel about your later bowls. I have gone back to my starting the day with Five Brothers, and actually smoked multiple bowls of it today. The other tobaccos I have had, this being one of them, have been pretty boffo. Boffo, btw... Chronicle Code word for Boola Boola. We really do need to keep this between us, Hush Hush, Definitely Down Low, on the QT, and Strictly Confidential

Couple tobacco thoughts, as long as we keep it Hush Hush, Definitely Down Low, on the QT, and Strictly Confidential. I got a second order from Iwan Reis. I am having to piece meal this as money permits. All the money I took in entertaining sailors got scooped up by Bully this week. BUT, I mentioned the other day about the Sutliff Private Stock CD mix. It is really great, having a really nice back flavor. To me, back flavor is solidly there, but it kind of slides in with the tobacco. I was ready to buy some more but decided to open a tin of Iwan Reis Dutch. I totally went nuts over this. Same issue. It's not the overall smoke that comes in. It def comes in on the Down Low. It's almost sweet. Maybe detect a little cocoa one minute and Butterscotch the next. This is a real keeper and might be something to stock up on before the Sutliff CD. Warning on the CD. It's out of production in the tin and mine was aged at least a few years. Wonderful, but I doubt if Reis's supply will last forever. Now for what I am smoking at present. I have mentioned my love of Peter Stokkebye's English Oriental Supreme. Well, I picked up a few (month or two back) of some Whiskey and Bourbon blends. They can be the same thing, but if the same brand has both, they are different. This whiskey blend is mild, flavorful, and should be a boon at that price to buy some bulk. I think it might be a match for Sutliff Private Stock Top Shelf that Darin gifted me. I am finding that many of the PS bulks are ringers for Sutliff bulks, even though different manufacturers. Anyway, this is nothing astounding, but if you like whiskey but don't like that many of the blends bite, this one is for you. Also to recap, the Iwan Reis signature blends really have some nostalgic and righteous flavors

zambini you know me well. I like Robert Goulet, but you can't tell the Reticulans that. With them it's all Frank Frank Frank. I have to admit, though, that I want to keep trying more of Iwan Reis's blends. The reason is that many are nothing like any other blend at SP, P&C. PS has also been surprising me. My first several small amounts had no flavor. I never buy less than four ounces now unless it's tinned

Good evening, Chroniclers. I am getting ready to watch some sci-fi from the fifties and sixties. This will be a minor intelligence drop, or in my case lack thereof. I mentioned this before, but now I am sure. The E. Hoffman Blends I love so much, Distinguished Gentleman and Spilman's Mixture are created-reproduced by Iwan Reis. I don't know the mad genius behind these blends, but I have not had a bad load of any of his tobaccos. The worst thing I could say about one was that it was so mild I tasted and felt nothing. That could be worse. I am having a field day with 3 Star Dutch and Doctor Bradley's Mixture. One other character of the Hoffman Blends is a distinct topping, mild though it may be. It is not the same as Iwan's other brands, but his other brands have their own distinct topping that I would swear were formulated by the same gentle hands. That said, I finished the day with Five Brothers in a huge bent pot. I am in Nic Hit Heaven. Of all the things in this large universe sometimes it is still a small universe. On Twitter, while ranting, I came across a member with the name Pleiades. I wrote her and said I was a humble Zeta Reticulan and could we follow each other. Well, she agreed. And when I mentioned that the Reticulans were playing the Pleiadians in the Universe PlukeNgork Championships I asked if we could be friendly enemies. She agreed. So, if you see two shooting stars passing in the night you will know that universal peace is at hand. Though I can't afford the luxury of official jerseys and hats to wear I think I can paint a Wisconsin Cheese Head Hat purple and throw mustard on a toga and fit right in. Bully the Lionhearted is still doing well. That bleeding was a one time thing from the bone or whatever got caught in his throat. Xuan and I are being careful with him, much more than we thought we already were. I never realized that videos here may not be available in other countries, but being the sneak I am I can post those videos to my own webspace. No issues there. And, no, Lady Margaret , you won't see me singing "That's Amore" any time soon. I may do one of my Elvis songs, but then you might start thinking that it was me that went into hiding forty years ago. Hold on, while I grab a peanut butter and banana sandwich. I don't think there are any secrets in this post, but just to be sure let's keep this Hush Hush, Definitely Down Low, on the QT, and Strictly Confidential To all the Chronicler Dads, Happy Father's Day!

Scott W I found out some intel you might be interested in. First, G'day all. Just placed my third order with Iwan Reis and one from SP. In a few days I'll have fifteen pouches of Five Brothers. Probably will last me three to four weeks. From Iwan I got some more Sutliff CD in a tin. A pouch of 3 Star Ebony, and a tin of what may be of interest to Scott. I finally figured out what is in the Secret Sauce of 3 Star Dutch. I proffer this knowing you smoke Velvet. The ingredient is Licorice. However, it is not as throat ripping as Velvet can be sometimes. It is fast becoming one of my favorites. More intel when I get it. I only told the Secret Ingredient to one outside person. I sent it along with a cyanide pill in case someone tries to torture it out of him. That means this transmission is Hush Hush, Definitely Down Low, on the QT, and Strictly Confidential

The Iwan Reis Report Required Reading: www.worth.com/inside-americas-oldest-tobacco-shop/Decoder Rings may be necessary Summary so far, the Skinny, the Gist, the Upshot, the Lowdown, Bottom Line: Private Blend - Nothingness epitomized Ko-Ko - All Burley with a tad of Lat. Toasted Bread flavor. Smokey. Thick flavor Dr. Bradley's - Exceptional Quality in the vein of a mild English. This is where the parts of the blend are more important than its whole. International Blend: Totally great. Mild English. This is where the whole is more important than the parts. Three Star Dutch: Licorice in the Secret Sauce. Iwan seems to use this sauce or variation in giving all of his blends a twist. This is like a mild Velvet that will not rip your throat apart. Old Colonial: An enjoyable smoke that may be worth repeat purchases. Affinity: A harmless blend that seems a little sweet in a good way. Pleasant overall smoke. Would buy again if they were out of what I wanted. Now for the newest part: Three Star Ebony: This is supposed to be strictly Black Cavendish with Vanilla. I could swear there is a Secret Sauce Component here, as the Vanilla flavor is altered into some hybrid flavor. I bought a pouch and a day later ordered 2 7 Ounce Tins. That should speak of how I feel. Could be an all day smoke if you want Black Cav all day. I was not sure how the tins would be when opened. The pouch came drenching wet to the point that I think I got screwed out of a half an ounce. I smoked for small bowls and had a small portion left in the pouch. However, the tins arrived and the insides were moist, but not overly so. NOTE: This tobacco needs to be smoked a little moist. Drying it out as much as others makes you lose the flavor. Even though I have no clue as to all the components this will be a pleasant variation over a couple of my other BC loves. In other words, more to choose from. Back on Ko-Ko for a moment: I smoked some Sutliff Model Match yesterday. It was very close to Ko-Ko in the toasty dept. but the little bit of Lat in the Ko-Ko makes a pleasant difference. The Collective Wants You: You all know how much I love Distinguished Gentleman. I could not tell who made it, but I noticed the blend has been around for the exact same years as IR has been. The article I linked says it all. E.Hoffman, maker of Distinguished Gentleman, opened IRC and brought his nephew, Iwan, on later. Imagine a world before the Internet. In Tobacco Heaven you could walk into a Kramer's or an Iwan Reis. You would need go no further, as the variety of home blends could keep you happy from 1857 to 1900. I am not sure about Kramer's, but Iwan has all the blends I mentioned, more in this section, yet also has a section on his English Blends. Were I to choose a tobacconist forever, IR gets my business. I will enter the collective and share my brain with others who share theirs, never to leave this wonderful Hotel California. I can imagine going into Kramer's and being in a Danny Kaye mood, or "Mr. Kramer, a little House Blend is in order today." Only to choose Cary Grant the next day. Obviously I am not going to give up my other blends, but the joy of going into a small shop knowing they can please every taste bud transports me into smokey worlds of decades past. Side Note: Sutiff CD Private Stock Blend 8 ounce tins are still in stock. Out of production, so it already has a few years age on it. Now you all know this has to be kept Hush Hush, Definitely Down Low, on the QT, and Strictly Confidential

Smoking some Holiday Match and enjoying it in my MM Devil Acorn. Five Brothers, Chatham Manor, Uhle's Perfect Plug (from @10furlongs), Iwan Reis International Blend, oh, and two scoops of Murray's 1862 Whitehall. Dr. Bradley's for later with some cheesy Sci-Fi flick. Legend Lover I think I can speak for the Chroniclers in wishing you the best easiest outcome for your throat. Everyone else, I hope you all have a great weekend. Mark, hope Thor is getting ready to get his Private First Class Stripe. I have to get under an umbrella, as the moon is in the Seventh House and Jupiter's aligned with Mars

Just got home from a visit with Walt. He got the custom-bilt for @markinor buffed up and looking even better than I had it. Thank you Walt! Tallahassee traffic was crazy at 530 on a Friday. Going 70+ in a 45 to keep up with traffic is always a great experience. Enjoy the PPSR my friend Still no word from Iwan Ries... or tobacco. Tomorrow make a call and speak to the manager of Iwan Reis once again. Don’t let them get away with the very poor customer service.......they are completely off my list. Along with P&C and Cigars International 👍 Demand a full refund, tell him this is going on far to long!!!
