Hi everyone. I have been peeking in here for a few months and finally decided I might want to participate. I retired fairly recently from academic life and have rediscovered some of my old, neglected hobbies (and vices)--pipe smoking included. I used to smoke a pipe on a fairly regular basis in the late 1970's through the 1980's. Stopped smoking inside the house when my son was born, and boxed up all my pipes. I went on a cleaning binge recently and cleaned them all up. Well, who can resist not loading a nice, clean pipe up with tobacco? I look forward to learning more about pipes and tobacco through the collective wisdom of the members. Can I say "Roll Tide" in this post?

Welcome from the Sunshine state. What kinds of tobacco did you smoke back in the day? Are you looking at trying out some new stuff?

Good to have you William. Be careful around the Ol Cajun. LSU is tops in his book!

Welcome to the forum, glad to hear that you didn’t sell off your pipes during your break......you are able to hit the ground running.
What are some of your favorite blends, and are there discontinued blends that you long for?

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone. I started the pipe when there was a Tinder Box near me. I smoked mostly aromatics--the Tinder Box bulk blends. The guy who owned the shop told me tinned tobaccos were dry and worthless. I suppose there is a higher profit margin in bulk tobaccos. Since finding some online retailers, I have learned differently and am sampling liberally. I have learned that VaPers are not for me. I tend to smoke lighter English blends and have come to appreciate the burning qualities of flake tobacco.
As for pipes: I have several Willmers ranging from AAA to an AB (which is actually my favorite as far as smoking goes), three Charatans, a couple of older Ben Wades, and a recently acquired sandblasted Bonfiglioli which is a wonderful pipe. Since I tend to be something of a traditionalist in all things, most of my pipes are straight or (ever so slightly) bent billiard and dublin shapes. I will post some pics soon in an appropriate thread.
As for Ol Cajun--my French/Catholic ancestors settled this part of the coast, so we are culturally sort of cousins. I grew up calling a white perch a sac-a-lait, my grandmother made what she called "coobayon" (the proper French is cour boullion)--a tomato based broth with a double handful of the "trinity" tossed in along with some seafood. It is sort of a coastal "hunter's stew." I'm sure we will get along. As for his football team--well--what can I say?
