I used to order huge printers for work, HP 9050dn if you know what I mean. We bought refurbished ones because we are a payroll company and we would wear them out like no other business. Anyway, the shipping was all over the place, from carefully loaded skids that took all day to open, to crushed boxes made mostly out of tape. The latter usually amounted to broken spare parts. There should be an advanced education course on packaging and logistics so that companies can find people that know what they are doing. I have been an Amazon customer since they started, and I can see that they are constantly working to perfect the balance of quality and economy in the packaging. All the Prime members that take advantage of the free and easy returns probably push them.

Amazon has excellent customer service. I don't like hearing how they treat employees, but I have no direct info on that. Only what I read. They often give me promotional credits over even some of the smaller issues, and I don't ask. I have been with them from the beginning as well. When I broke my neck back in 2000, I spent 40K that year getting computer equipment and things I needed to make things easier here. Often, these days, even if you get a Prime item, someone else ships it and you get less than stellar packaging.

I package about 10 items a week for shipping. I do it myself. This is on the vendor. You have to expect certain things happening during shipping and must tape and tape and tape. I recall in my early ebay days I bought a 100g tin of something, maybe darkstar. The seller packed it so tight with peanuts that when the weight of other packages was put on top of it the tin popped its seal because that was the weak link of the contents. You pack lightly but full and then tape every seam.

I got an order from P&C today. Everything arrived and not damaged, but see the pics below. This is a deal killer for the future. First, the boxes they use are fold opens that form the bottom and needs no (they do need) tape. The one tin was in bubble wrap, but the rest was just put in there. I am so amazed that nothing was lost. If this was one time it would not be an issue. Last year it was the computer. Then Moldy Boxes, which I got bitched at for pointing out until Russ found a bad lot. Every third or fourth package is packed okay. Most of the others do the job... barely. I took these pics before opening the box. I am sure someone somewhere will call me a whiner again. Oh, I did use the contact form. Out of three times prior I got one answer David, you need to follow the lead of Jim Inks. All of his tobaccos are shipped only one way....... Federal Eggs-press!

As an LTL freight company, once we see an issue with a shipper we dispatch consultants to give advice on packaging and palletizing, because once the driver signs the bill of lading, we are on the hook for it. If a driver thinks that there is a problem, it is up to his discretion on whether or not to pick it up. We will haul anything the shipper wants as long as it is legal, but we mark it as damaged at pickup if they insist that it has to ship...at that point, it is all on them.
We had a cosmetics company that refused to get with the program, even after we picked up freight and hauled it to the terminal, the packages collapsed and the palletized product was a mess....we dropped them like a bad habit.
It is a different situation with parcels, different dynamics in play, but I imagine that if the transportation company saw a big spike from a shipper, it would trigger an investigation...most parcel recipients aren't going to file with UPS/Fedex/ USPS, so it may never end up on their radar.....I can tell you that Fedex freight has a horrible reputation on destroying freight...we have had several customers jump ship to them for cheaper pricing only to return...a cheaper freight bill sometimes costs thousands. It seems monthly Fedex ground rolls a set of doubles in the PHX> LA corridor...their drivers are about as bad as they come.

David that box is horrible! The problem I see is everyone just kicks the can to the next guy. If P/C uses trash packaging and still sends the box, they kicked to to Fed-Ex..Fed Ex gets the box, shrugs and kicks it to the local US Post Office and the post office kicks the can to you and will say "have the sender file a claim".
Same goes for UPS!!!

This is the kind of thing that I see and keeps me away from P&C. I've never purchased from them and seeing things like this makes me not want to do it anytime soon.

On an archived Pipesmagazine show with Mike Butera as the guest, Mike tells the story of Brian Levine being responsible for sending a large batch of Butera blends to Mike. He really blew it on the packaging and the boxes had tins spilling out of them, with a lot of dented tins. At that time, Mike said he still had a long way to go to smoke up all the dented tins.
I wanted to write Mike and offer my services at helping him with the problem.

P&C did reply in a little more than two days, which is not bad. I didn't ask for anything, as I got it all. They did thank me and let me know to say something if it happens again. I can't say whether sincere or not, but they did answer and I credit them for that.

Nope. The two tobaccos I would like I'll gladly pay more for from someone more efficient. Sometimes frugality can take a big bite out your behind. I commend you! I am service oriented. We have had the same groomer for 18 years. When I became too disabled to drive he started picking our doggies up and returning them. Of course, he gets paid extra. Recently he said he had to raise his prices. He also raised his employees's wages and is now giving them a bonus to help with their healthcare. That made me extremely happy. Anyway, a couple months ago I was having really bad hand tremors and asked him to write the check out. That's how much service means to me. Not trying to boast, though it sounds that way. My outlook is if people enjoy and get rewarded by my business we all benefit. When our last doggie was dying, Stevie drove in thirty miles to take him to the animal hospital. The relationship didn't start out that way, but it matured. I do find lying still important, though... like when the wife asks how much I tipped the waitstaff.

At one point I worked for Walmart in their ICS team.I worked all three shifts.Started out with two days on mornings and three days evenings. After about two months I moved to the overnight shift. Where I going with this is on the evening shift we unloaded the trucks.I can honestly say that my boys could have done better loading with their hands tied and just using their feet. That is when I learned how the truck is loaded at the Hub.The boxes travel along roller tracks and as they pass scanners that bar code on the side tells the computer which track to open or close so the box ends on the proper truck.at the end the box is literally tossed or thrown into the trailer. No stacking. No consideration of weights. And over half the load was recycled boxes. Not boxes used two or more times,I'm talking boxes made from recycled paper. These were/are the weakest form of cardboard. It will not hold up to a "Gorilla".Anywho, What I'm getting at is that USPS,UPS,FEDEX and others who are handeling thousands of parcels an hour have all gone to this type of shipping and I feel David has a legitimate complaint,PC should take into consideration the automated process that the box will go thru and use boxes and packing material appropriate to ensure a safe delivery of the product

That actually sums things up nicely. I do a lot of biz with Walmart because we have no car (by choice). Walmart had some very ill boxed packages a few times, like honey and sugar all over the inside of the box. I talked to them. As much as Amazon and Walmart seem to big for their britches, their customer service has always been stellar. Over time things are well wrapped, in boxes twice as thick as two years ago. In fact, their boxes get re-used three or four times here and do not wear out.

I had a squashed box with a squashed tin from CI (not sure if they share the same warehouse and packers as c.com and P&C or not). I notified them and sent them a picture, and they offered to send a replacement. What they didn't tell me was that UPS would be coming to pick up the damaged tin, and that they expected the original damaged box. So UPS showed up unexpectedly one day, expecting it to be all packed up and ready to go. I had the tin but not the box, but the UPS guys said he had a label so he took it. A few weeks later CI writes to tell me they didn't receive the damaged tin and taht they require it. Later the same day they wrote to say that they did receive it after all.
A lot of drama and expense on their end for one bloody damaged tin, says I.
