Wife and I got married in Scotland past July. Also went to Ireland. Galway is probably my favorite place on earth I've ever been. I'd love there in a heart beat. We went to Galway 2 years ago. It's a long drive from where I live, but it's a great place. As is Donegal and the whole north coast... and west coast of Ireland.

Well. if you like theater, you could always move to Ashland Oregon, home of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Housing costs about 1/3 what it costs in the Bay Area. No sales tax. You're only 10 miles outside of the cultural mecca of Medford. PC is prevalent, but not deadly.
Not much in the way of steak and kidney pies though.

I lived in northern London for a couple of years in the early '90s. Traveled about some. I enjoyed the west country and the Highlands of Scotland the most including the people. Londoners are hard on Americans, except the east enders. Maybe it was just me, LOL. There was a war going on and that may have influenced people.
London is a great place to visit for a few days but retreating to the pastoral beauty of the villages and countryside is what makes for my kind of life.
I suggest you rent homes in different parts of the UK before making longer term decisions.
My experience with Ireland was in the early 1970s so I am out of date. Clearly, a lovely place and the people are more amenable to American immigrants.

SO and I are retired, and seriously considering moving to the UK. Comments, advice, suggestions? Bangers and Mash, a 2 hour Chunnel ride to Paris, and you can buy Samuel Gawith in bulk! What are you waiting for!

I would love to go on regular extended stays to tour the countryside and look for distant relatives. In addition, I could spend weeks touring distilleries, pipe factories, and pipe shops. Plus, I could stock up on some of my favorite pipe tobacco blends, like Condor!
