...this hasn't happened to me often, but every once in a while, the crappiest, most beat-up pipe I own seems to *sing* with whatever tobacco I put into it...

It happens to me occasionally; that's why I have trouble getting rid of pipes.

I had a Rossi bent pot shank crack. I glued it and put gorilla tape on it
A 6$ pressed meer from China stem cracked. I put an 8$ MM stem on it to save it
I brake for turtles, too

I wouldn't say that they are the "crappiest or most beat-up" necessarily, but definitely pipes that were well-used and for which I paid the least. Not really a surprise when you think about it. They were well used for a reason.

I have a few like that. Some cheap cobs smoke really well for me too.

Cobs, I call them beater cobs. Mostly Country Gentleman. I commute to work and back most days with them. They look like crap, but can't be beat for producing a quality smoke.

To be fair, all my cobs sing for me... But I think that's the beauty of cobs.
Edit: in waiting for that moment with one of my briars. I believe that day will come soon.

Fixing to stuff some LC Peach into a 18 y.o. basket Oom Paul sitter. A pipe doesn't have to look pretty to smoke well.
