It's a rainy day here and since I can't get out in the yard and do battle with Mother Nature, I decided to clean out some bookshelves. I found some old copies of Pipe Smoker magazine. Apparently I have everything from the first issue in 1983 until 1988. Not sure when they discontinued publication, but that is when I discontinued them (had a new, expensive baby at the time). Here's a photo of the first issue cover: The binder is full of them, but I did not order a second binder after the first filled up. Here is the whole lot: And look at these prices on tobacco in the mid '80's:

William, thanks for sharing that. Those prices are really cool to see. As late as 2002 I was paying 5.00 a tin for Dunhill English blends at Jrcigars. Today those same tins are 10.60, so double in 16 years. If you think about mfg. costs, it seems we are still paying short money for quality blends.

Thanks for posting, neato. It's really interesting to see that advertisement, too.

I don't think Black Man branded pipe tobacco would go down too well nowadays. Surprised it was okay in the 80s, actually.

Years ago Fribourg & Treyer made a blend called Negro Head. They eventually figured out it wasn't a politically correct name for the US market and changed it. I remember getting a couple of tins with the name BlackJack and there was a sticker covering the old name.

I had a subscription to that magazine too. Still have them stored away with my other pipe magazines. Back then that was one of the few ways there were to keep up with news in the pipe world. I remember getting them in the mail and having a big time reading them and sending off for catalogs with the addresses in the ads.

I remember getting a couple of tins with the name BlackJack and there was a sticker covering the old name. I've seen that in reference to a tobacco type - as in Virginia, Latakia, Negro Head. I think was an old tin of Germain's Plum Cake.

Cool post! Thanks for taking the time to do so.
I agree that adjusting for inflation, we still can smoke and cellar reasonably.
Ben Rapaport recently commented that with many of the pipe collectors aging and passing from the scene, he expects to see affordable collections on the auction market in the future. In the context, I believe that he was talking about the really old stuff, 19th century.

It was my way of learning about all this--in the dark days before the internet.

Was Earthworks a mail order catalogue ? I assume they were a mail order friendly retailer. The Earthworks flyer was an insert in the Pipe Smoker magazine.
