This goes back to the sixties, when I started on my pipe journey, and it was this: that a pipe blend does NOT have to burn off your tongue, that there was good tobacco instead of cheap tobacco concealed by a flamethrower topping. That is the earliest lesson for beginners long before the internet, but the most important one. It made the difference between continuing the pipe hobby or fleeing in disgust and horror. Oh yes, I discovered quite a few blends made of napalm and floor sweepings, then I found out that English blends were the smoothest.

Do not try to smoke to a 'fine white ash' if it tastes like licking the floor of a fireplace.

Do not try to smoke to a 'fine white ash' if it tastes like licking the floor of a fireplace. And to that point, especially because that's when tobaccos bite like hell. I learned that the hard way.

What's the one thing that you know now that you wish you knew when you first began?
I never expected one of the biggest pipe tobacco companies out there to shut down, and shut down fairly quickly. Folks with plenty of experience have said it all along that these things happen and plan accordingly. I didn't listen so well. I was fortunate with some blends, but others, not so much. At least now I have a better idea of where I need to be focusing. And also that I need to listen a little better.
