Hello everyone from here in Wales!
I have been smoking both cigars and pipes for many years.
More recently I have used mainly Peterson Pipes and their tobacco especially cube cut Founders Choice.
I was recently in Spain and being without a pipe bought a Savinelli with the balsa filter.
I saved it until back here in the UK and was looking forward to my new smoke.
HoweverI had immediate tongue bite even smoking very slowly.
Is it possible this will decrease as the pipe breaks in or is it a feature of this pipe and filter.
The strange thing is while in Spain I bought a really cheap pipe...only 20 euros and it has smoked perfectly from the first bowl !

Welcome to the Patch. Does the Savinelli have pre-coated bowl? I have about a dozen Savs and never experienced what you have, although if the bowl is natural it could from the breaking in process. In general, tongue bite is attributed to fast smoking.
Good luck with the new pipe and let us know how things progress.

Was this smoking your usual tobacco?
Possibly the tobacco was too moist and caused steam?

I too have a few Savs, and no problems. The balsa in fact seems to me to ameliorate bite by catching moisture. It is true, however, that at any time one can get a poor piece of briar that for some unknown reason smokes poorly for a while. I make a lot pipes for myself from the same batch of briar and have 2 that are harsh for no explicable reason. Maybe the animals used that bush for a pissoir, who knows?

If you were using the balsa filter perhaps you were drawing harder than you are used to due to the restricted feel of the filter?

Welcome to the group.. I've had several Savinelli's over the years.I still have two. I've never had a problem. One took a little longer to break in than the others .It came around though and smokes great now.

Thanks for all the very fast replies.
I was smoking very gently and I am used to the effects of a filter as I always use them in my Peterson Pipes.
The bowl was coated but I will try other mixes to see what happens but as a cake developes it might get better.
My screen name should be Lenticular a name I use on other forums. It came about as a name of a rare cloud formation I sometimes came across in my flying career, but on this occasion I either left out the R or perhaps I was limited to 9 characters!!

...welcome from SE Tennessee...Enjoy the Patch! I own quite a few Sav's and never experienced that...I don't use a filter either...perhaps a longer break-in period is required...other posted advice seems appropriate too...

Welcome from the Mile High City! Try other tobacco blends in your Savinelli and see how they do. Certain blends can taste great in one pipe and only so-so in another.

Howdy from Texas!  My great grandfather on my mother's side came here to the Us from Wales back in the 1890's! As far as your bite coming from your new Savinelli I have 15 Savinelli's from all price levels and all bought new and I never got any thing near Bite from any. A few smoked hot/warm on the initial break-in but no Bite. My experience after 50+ years of smoking the it's caused by a combination of operator error and tobacco. JMHO |
