My 25 year old CRT TV finally blew the capacitor powering the electron gun. Or, so I suspect. If I could find the part, it could be fixed without much trouble. But, that is not the way we roll in the USA today! So, I went to Walmart and returned with a 32 inch Samsung LED Smart TV which fits in the same cabinet.
This is a 1080p or so HD TV and the picture is amazing. Even old B&W movies come out sharp. Sadly, some of the moody contrast famous in Noir photography is lost. Now, with these thin screens the speakers are small and the sound is terrible, reminds me of a talking tin can. I spent another $14 and bought an optical sound to analog converter box and cabled that to a Bose Wave Radio. Sound is quite good now although the Wave is not the best for plain dialogue, coming into its own with music scores and sound effects- a fuller range of sound. If I were to do this again I would use a stereo receiver with an integral amp containing sound equalizer capability so sound can be more finely tuned and with two stereo speakers. Somewhere in the old inventory is an early Sony Surround Sound system with all the speakers. That I am saving for the 72 inch curved screen monstrosity which will one day replace my 36 inch, 150 pound flat screen CRT TV in the living room. That old beast was a top of the line JVC and I expect will be around for some time.
I am a little nostalgic about these old cathode ray TVs and will be a little sad when the last of them are gone. What I grew up with.

We have an old flatscreen we inherited. Every time we turn it on it says, "Your projection lamp is nearing the end of it's life, please replace immediately" or something like that. It's been 4 years now.

65 inch flatscreen in the living room, 55 inch in the bedroom, no looking back. The old cathode Ray TVs pretty much sucked....it is like comparing a wringer washer to a front loading washing machine.
Lifting a 27” cathode ray, you feel like you are getting a hernia, lifting a 65 inch flat tv is a breeze by comparison.
Smart tv’s though, give you the apps they think you should have... a ROKU streaming device is better in my opinion.

What did you do with the old cathode-ray TV? Around here you can't give them away even if they work.

Analog TV was rock stable for over the air viewing. Digital can be cranky and the slightest vibration can require an antenna adjustment. Rather ironic environmentally speaking, when you consider how many TV sets were instantly antiquated.

We had a 35 inch flat crt that weighed over 180 lbs. We kept it for years just because we couldn't move it. When a surplus 40" was dumped at work, I got inspired. The living room is a 70" 4k dumb Vizio that plays from a Yamaha 740 watt 7.2 4k receiver with Klipsch speakers. I don't think it gives us any more satisfaction than the Philco 26" oval color console that we got to watch Bonanza.

Just kidding. It went to the landfill. I keep my big one because it still works and is theft resistant.

70" Sharp Aquos full array LED in the living room with huge Cerwin Vega speakers with 15" sub woofers. Hooked up to a Denon receiver and a Klipsch powered sub. 65" Sharp Aquos full array LED in my bedroom with a Polk Audio sound bar with powered sub woofer. 50" Panasonic plasma in one kid bedroom and a 47" Vizio in the other. All my cable boxes are 1080P and have multi room dvr with huge download capacity. I take my tv watching seriously as I watch live sports most of the time.

My wife treats TVs like she does my pipes...do you REALLY NEED a bigger one?

I have no more wives so I answer to no one. My children love all the tv's and roku players so they would never complain.

The new TVs don't have RFC adaptors so no Atari, no RCA plugs so no Nintendo, and the flat screen won't allow the light from gun games to reflect back so either the old TV stays or the old video games go.

Finally got around to setting up my new Smarter-Than-I-Am TV to do more than just the Dish receiver.
Naturally, I had to bring in a kid techno wiz.
I should stick with what I know; e.g. shoveling coal into the firebox, hand cranking the truck to start, shoeing the horse. I am so out-of-date, I am now part of The Fossil Record!
Finally success with the Smart TV. I have trouble keying in all the info on the tiny remote control. These things should have a full sized keyboard.

Walmart has a $10 dollar universal remote with huge keys just for us old folks. Also, a lot of them can use a Bluetooth keyboard.

For multiple devices, I like the harmony remote.... it took me awhile to figure it out, but once you get it set up it is really nice.
