Well I have been binge watching 70's cop shows that I TiVo-ed and must say,, the Mod squad is not anywhere as good as I remember it, The Rookies is a pretty darn good series, not mention Kate Jackson not only looks great but plays a great character. Police Story took a few episodes to get used to since there is not a regular cast, it changes every show, the show still holds my interest and I can watch 3 in a row no problem.

Barney Miller was one of the all time TV greats. Hill Street Blues was another one we never missed.

Hill Street Blues was 1980's...... Watching the old shows the gun handling now looks so silly......Every car door is an effective ballistic shield, proper muzzle control is non existent, recently saw a guy n an old cop show with a suppressor on e revolver...I even saw Frank Cannon bring down a Cessna with a snubby revolver...one shot! That is certified badass shooting!. I remember in one cop show from the 70's a criminal making his own ammo was putting cyanide in a cavity of the bullet to make the rounds more deadly.... No eye or hearing protection at the range... It goes on, and on, and on.....not so much better nowadays either, but it was really bad in the 70's.

You should check out “Mindhunter” on Netflix. A new show, but set in the late 70’s. I enjoyed it a lot.
I’m also a big “Columbia” fan.

David Cassidy: Man Undercover! I'm not a huge fan of the genre unless it's also supernatural (Night Stalker), but did like Columbo. I remember watching Baretta and Kojak with my dad, but can't recall much about them.

Savalas was ahead of the curve with his shaved head. The lollipop bit was lame. As TV movies, the Kojak entries were entertaining.

Technically not a cop show, there was a prison show called "On the Rocks". Pretty funny, but monotone comedy. Loved Kojack. Cade's County with Glenn Ford, Adam 12. I think Dragnet's last year was 1970.

A few winters back, I watched all of "Adam 12" from start to finish. Held up well, I thought.

I tried watching I Dream of Jeanie with my wife and she couldn't get past the "master" thing. She'd probably feel the same about June Cleaver in her heels and pearls cooking a pot roast.

And I couldn't get past Major Nelson acting the nervous fool when Barbara Eden called him master, while putting the moves on him.

I had a friend who, as an actor, died a thousand deaths at the hands of Starsky & Hutch, Beretta, Kojak, Canon, Friday & Gannon and was booked by Danno more than once. An Italian American from The Bronx, he looked like a punk hood. He auditioned for the role of Fredo Corrleone but did not make the cut. I cannot watch those shows without looking for Jimmy O.

That’s pretty cool. I once met a guy that looked every bit of a punk thug and I think was in the dead pool, he said in an elevator scene Dirty Harry wasted him... he said watching the movie he cheered for inspector Callaghan. Bruce Dern made a pretty good living at looking like a dirtbag.

So.. Watching Columbo I have always gotten the feeling that there is maybe a sad back story. Ever notice he mentions his wife multiple times in every episode, but the fact that he chain smokes cheap cigars, drives that rust bucket, wears the same dirty, unpressed suit daily, and seemingly has trouble tying a tie and or buttoning his shirt... And that hair! It is my theory that Columbo is a widower and having a hard go of it, so he loses himself in the job.

Saw once where Peter Falk went on a South American vacation, and he was surprised that everywhere he went was a mob scene. Unbeknownst to him, Columbo was a huge hit in the Southern Hemisphere.

A character so disheveled likely does not have anyone at home looking after him. He is a long way from Fred Thursday, LOL! Then again, look at the perpetual bachelor cop, Joe Friday. Neat as a pin. All those characteristics you describe are part of what the audience loved about him. Peter Falk always portrayed someone a little bent out of normal shape.

I was working in a house a few weeks back and there was a 15yo young man watching the old Hawaii 5-O. This young man stated that he had been watching for some time and every time Jack Lord said "book em Dano" it would make him laugh. As for me I'm a Rockford Files kinda guy.

Barney Miller for comedy series cop show and Kojack for best cop series of the time👍👍. Hill Street Blues as well, but the first year it aired was 1981....still a good cop show. For me NOTHING tops NYPD BLUE...all 13 seasons. Now Blue Bloods, I recently watched all 8 seasons on Netflix 👍
