Now a lot of us here are experienced pipe smokers,at least to some extent. And what I'm about to say is redundant. So bear with me and understand that this is aimed at those still struggling to find that "perfect smoke".You've got your pipe and tobacco.Pack it according your favorite method, this will be the most important step involved. If you pack too tight, you will be pulling so hard that it hurts. Not exactly tongue bite but close. If you pack too loose it wont have a chance to stay lit.Get a snug pack with just a bit of resistance on a dry or test draw. Some will describe this as sipping water thru a straw. Now char the tobacco and then tamp it down Lightly, take a few test draws while your doing this to keep from over tamping. Now light up.About every 15-30 seconds, take a pull and sit back and watch the smoke curl lazily away.If it feels like it's going out, take your tamper and just lightly tamp around the edges of the tobacco.Don't Press. If it does go out, relight.Don't concern yourself if you need to relight a few or several times, we all do at one time or another.Don't get all tied up trying to taste all the different tobaccos or flavors described on the tin or pouch.Just enjoy the moment.Watch TV,read a book or eBook, watch your kids or pets.Get lost in the smoke as it curls and wafts away. You'll pick up on the nuances later, but for now just Keep It Simple. There are more important things to stress over such as "How am I gonna slip my new pipe(s) in?".

Good advice @matthew Reminds me of the book "The Complete Joy of Homebrewing" by Charlie Papazian, who states "Relax, don't worry, have a homebrew..."

Good stuff Matthew! I am with you.
I heard some video blogger explain that if you are able to:
Smoke without tongue bite, Smoke without heating the bowl to more than warm to the touch, Get great flavor out of the tobacco, Smoke it down to the bottom.
Then you are done.
In my view you should get a certificate.
If you can do those things reliably, you do not need anyone else's instructions or even advise on how to smoke, if you don't want it. Sure there is much to learn, and learning is always fun, but once you have your "certificate" any further learning can be put in the category of enrichment, as opposed to skills acquisition.
The curmudgeon in me would like to say it this way. Your certificate, demonstrating to you that you can do the four things, is your right to tell anyone with unsolicited advice to take a walk. (Do it gently of course.)

Well said. I equate it to diving and cycling, dive your own dive. nobody else's. can't go wrong. ExChef

(Do it gently of course.) Category of Enrichment,,,I like that. Some are naturally enriched, others learn or develope. I myself am not. When I light up,I'm not looking to taste vanilla, cherry,or chocolate. More,I',m looking for that little tingle in the back of my head that says "AHHHH". I've had that with most blends I've tried.I've had a few blends that evoked a very different response. The hardest thing I work on or worry about when I light up is trying to blow smoke rings, but Gandalf Curses,I just can't do it.

trying to blow smoke rings, but Gandalf Curses,I just can't do it. Me either. I have tried all kinds of ways. I would like to say that it is a highly overrated skill, but then again, that might just be because i can't do it.

See, I like this take on things. Cos if you've read my other posts, I'm not great at detecting anything other than smoke... And I'm not really tasting it, I more smelling it as I exhale. Don't get me wrong, I'm still on the quest for tasty tobacco, and I have found some, but edward has hit the nail on the head...it's the feeling of AHHHHH that I look for.
