I have about 180 pipes, and about the same number of containers of tobacco. So I am well balanced. A Texan who's BALANCED I've got about 25 briars and 5 cob and a couple meers, with about 4 lbs bulk tobaccos running around. After spending a few hours each week smoking and cleaning them,I think all I collect is DUST.

Neither. To me a collector buys something to either display to look at or as an investment to sell (hopefully for a profit) at a later date. I’ve accumulated tobacco, but not to look at, but to smoke. Cellaring deep on McC and Dunhill starting years ago turned out to be prudent. I could flip my McC and make a lot of money, but I bought it to smoke, and still intend to do just that. All my pipes excluding two box sets of MM pipes, one set being corndogs, remain unsmoked. The MM bamboo set trying to sell at my cost just because it’s a waste to have them and not smoke them IMO. The corndogs however, I may or may not smoke sometime, but would consider those my only “collector” type pipes at the moment. Pipes I’ve bought, I’ve always intended to use. Those that don’t get used or used enough get moved along. Also danno, still can’t believe you haven’t smoked those corndogs yet! LOL I know...someday....maybe...

Well, I can't say anything about the people of Oklahoma as I have never met or even seen one. Never been to the state, or had a reason to go there. I have been to the surrounding states and I am quite fond of them. They never talk about Oklahoma either.

Depends on the pipe. That circa 1900 unsmoked pipe that someone fires up might just crack on the first bowl. Why? Because the uncoated briar inside the chamber has had decades to oxidize, and lose some of it's imperviousness (the things we learn from master restorers...). So the pipe is no longer a rare unsmoked vintage pipe, it's now just another old cracked pipe. There is something that can be done to protect the bowl before firing it up, but why would I share that? I smoke almost everything I own, and I'm a collector, primarily of Family Era Barlings. My oldest working pipe is from 1872. But I do have a few museum pieces that I don't smoke and don't need to smoke. They're neat just to have. And that first match would be a very very very EXPENSIVE one. And for what? Like I don't have other great pipes to smoke. So my 1907 unsmoked Barling set is going to remain unsmoked by me. I enjoy the history and lore of pipe smoking as much as I enjoy a good smoke. The unsmoked vintage pieces satisfy that part of my interest. I've put a number of years into building up a cellar, which now feels complete for my needs, and am now more engaged in preserving it, which means that I'll be jarring a bunch of stuff rather than leaving it in tins. What I bought, I bought to smoke. I do have a few blends that I dislike, like Penzance, that I use as either gifts or barter. But the rest of the cellar is for smoking, and I've limited my further purchases down to a trickle, just replacing my everyday bulk mindless smokes as they run low. At this point, I'm pretty much done buying pipes and tobaccos, especially pipes. However, one can never have too many pipe cleaners.

I cannot claim to a pipe collector with only 14 pipes. I had more but they were misplaced when moving years ago. I have about ten tobacco mixtures.
Never was much of a collector except for old police badges. Had a wonderful collection of odd pieces. I researched the agencies issuing them and was often able to learn who they were issued to. When I was collecting they were not as expensive as today. Sold the collections individually years ago at a nice profit. This was due to having a short written history on many of them.

I would say I'm more of a tobacco gourmet or connoisseur or aficionado than collector (funny how all those words sound so poncy!). I buy it to try different blends from different makers. I have dozens of tins but almost no duplicates (with the exception of McClelland). Not to mention many bulk samples, of 2 oz or less.
So far I've managed to avoid PAD - because I know it will be a slippery slope. Since I inherited a good rotation with sentimental value, I've only bought a few cobs and some of those cheap Stanwells. But I live in hope of stumbling upon some nice Dunhills and Savinellis at a flea market someday....

I have a bunch of pipes and tobacco, but I never considered myself a collector. I'm a pipe smoker first, last, and always.

I love collecting pipes and other related ephemera, they are never far from my mind. Sadly my world revolves around pipes and pipe shows. I'm a one trick pony tobacco wise and am happy smoking my favorite bulk tobacco. I still have some collectible tins but I sold off thousands of dollars of tobacco to fiance the pipe collection.
I was very busy at work today but I managed to slip off to where I could find some cell service and watch the final minutes of a eBay auction that I "won" on a long wanted piece of ephemera that had been a big hole in my collection for years. I'll be buzzing on that for a while!

I have 3 pipes in my current rotation, with 2 cobs in the mail. When I hit 1 year sober next month I plan on buying another pipe for the occasion. After that, I intend to only buy 1 pipe every year to mark another year of sobriety. The keyword is "intend." I'll buy cobs here and there when needed in the mean time.
I just started smoking a pipe about a month ago and have at least 3 lbs of tobacco already jarred up, some set aside to smoke, and 2 more orders coming in the mail. I see myself hoarding tobacco for the most part.
We'll see how my plan and "intentions" play out in the near future.

I feel like I'm a pipe collector if anything. If it were up to me, I'd get a new pipe every month but I only get baccy when it sounds like something tasty. Though I do hope to start expanding my cellar with the BOM thread.

To me a pipe collector is someone who collects pipes and smokes them. I'm not sure what to call the people who spend excessive amounts of cash on an Ivarsson, Nordh, etc. just as a status symbol and to display their wealth. Perhaps art collector?

"Collector" is probably too weak of a word for me. Maybe "obsessive compulsive addict" for both pipes and tobacco? I've got about 85 pipes on the racks that get smoked from regularly. Another dozen or so that get dusted off every now and again. Then there is the collection of about 40 Malaga pipes... Probably 150 or so pipes hanging out here. I consider all of my pipes to be my collection. Most are smoked and some are pure collector pieces. Then there is the 150 lb cellar...

I consider myself a pipe and tobacco aficionado rather than a collector and have definitely been focusing on acquiring more tobacco rather than pipes over the past several years.

I am a pipe accumulator. I have accumulated about 40 pipes, give or take, many repeats of the same type, so that when i want two bowls in a row from a Sav 320EX, or a MM Country Gentleman cob I don't have to smoke the same pipe twice in a row.
I am a tobacco accumulator. I have about two tins in the bottom drawer as yet unopened for every opened tin in the top drawer. Not a lot. But more than I can smoke in a month or two.
I am a mandolin accumulator. I have perhaps nine mandolins that I play regularly, and several others in various need of repair or set up.
I am a bourbon accumulator. I have about five different brands that I love, open and ready, and about five unopened bottles of same in the back.
I am a cowboy boot accumulator. I have about five pairs. They all get worn. In rotation. I am just about always in cowboy boots.
I am a pocket knife accumulator - becoming a collector. Here I study up on the history of them and get representatives of what I am fascinated by.
I am a book accumulator. The books are taking over my house. I am well over 1500 books and maybe above 2000. I can usually be found reading, and smoking.

After the latest thinning of the library, I'd guess I'm down to about 5000 volumes and we have no more free wall space for book shelves. When DW and I moved into our new flat in 2013, I had a 20 year-old dream fulfilled; a dedicated room to books and it's now our main library and smoking den. Shelves from floor to ceiling, a couple of arm chairs, my desk with the cat's comfort blanket and my PC, and my pipe collection. We have a smaller library branch in the living room for biographies, music books and fiction.
Sheer bliss.

Apparently many of us subscribe to the belief that books and pipe smoking equal nirvana. I've also been a book collector my whole life, have a library of about 3,000 books. The sofa in there is placed so I can see most of the books when on it.

My wife is probably more bothered with all the books I have over the pipes - mainly because they are stashed all over the place. She actually is an enabler when it comes to pipes though as she is usually the one that finds the pipes worth buying at the junktique shops. I only have about 50 pipes at the moment and they range from no-name Italian made basket pipes up to a 1926 Dunhill as far as value. I do have a Salmon & Gluckstein pipe with a silver band with hallmarks dated to 1890. It is a great smoker. As for my pipe tobacco stash, what my wife doesn't know won't hurt me.

Of course the flipside is that what my wife could find out will hurt me... A lot.
Thankfully I'm not at that point in my collection.
