Ahh, the good old days when we were young and foolish and were going to live forever. Surprisingly, I actually remember a couple of parties while on active duty where we had on 10 gallon Igloo marked adults only and kept where the kids couldn't accidentally get to it. One of the guy's wife was a non-drinker and had never had alcohol in her life. During a softball game, she picked up a cup and drank it. Then she had several more. Then her husband picked her up off the bench and carried her to his truck. Well, you remember it so it could have been worse. |

We used brandy in the bowl of a new pipe for the few bowls of tobacco, in order to help with starting a cake. After that, I would occasionally let brandy soak in the bowl after reaming. This seemed to refresh the pipe and eliminate those stale and nasty smells that sometimes appeared. I suspect Everclear would do the same thing, but without quite the same aroma as the brandy.

 A well smoked pipe cut in half notice the black is almost all cake. Picture from the net posted many years ago at PM and it is not mine. Notice the nasty build up in the shank that's where the stink hides.

^^^^THIS! In a ghosted pipe this area is where the ghost hides. I have bought estates that took 2 packs of pipe cleaners to get rid of the gunk from the shank. Now I use a drill and a couple of cleaners.
