Spent the past three days at the Colorado Gun Collector's Show. It was just as much a pipe show for me. Bought a nice Knute Freehand, traded four lesser pipes for my first Preben Holm and left three others with Tony Maddox for restoration and repair. Also bought a couple of guns. I will shoot pics of the pipes in the AM. The three getting repaired are a huge Jobey billiard and a BBB bulldog and a really abused Comoy Blue Riband. I think a dog chewed the Comoy. Pretty much just havng it cleaned, buffed and stem deoxidized so I can use it as a knock around pipe. I also had Tony set aside a huge no name staright grain Danish style pipe that he will send along when the repair work is done. So six new pipes are entering the fold. I gave up an Alpha Freehand that was pretty nice, but not my style, a large Admiral pipe, a no name Meerschaum and a panelled Bari squash. Woohoo!

It's not the typical gun show. No modern guns or accesories. It is all vintage arms and western or frontier collectables. The members put out very impressive displays that are judged. If you want to see more Winchesters and Colts in one place than you've ever seen before, in a great venue, it is the show for you. There are usually a couple of people with pipes, and Tony Maddox (classicpipesandrepair.com)is always there. It is not near as large as Wanenmacher's in Tulsa, but at about 1100 tables, you can get around the show well enough to see everything over the course of three days.

  Was at the Gun show, for some reason wife wanted to come. We separated and a while after I felt a tap on my shoulder, I want a ring she said, get it I said, you have to look at it, does it cost more than a car I said, NO she said , get it I said. It's her favorite ring.

Doug is a great guy, introduced to him by way of Tom Gresham some years back, a couple years later I saw him again at the NRA show... the guy does some magnificent work. There are a lot of similarities in the pipe community and the gun world, in both you can meet the superstars and have a drink with them... ain’t going to happen with so many other celebrities be they entertainment, or sports. I have spent time with Jerry Miculek, trained under Massad Ayoob, Jim Corolla (RIP) Col. Jeff Cooper (RIP), and Rob Leatham lives right down the road... I stop by and chat with Angus Hobdell’s staff about every other day through my work at Ghost products/ CZ USA... getting a Dan Wesson soon, just deciding which one... |
