Does anyone have a fancy tamper, or at least one that isn't the normal Czech tool?
I use a Czech tool, but I would like to make my own tamper. However, I need inspiration.
Does anyone use an out-of-the-norm tamper? Anyone care to share an image of what they use?

Most guys find a nicer sized twig in the forest or yard and commence whittling!

Dig out your pocket knife and sharpening stone. Sharpen the knife to a keen edge. With a Packed pipe go out on a nice lunt. Look around for a piece of branch about 15 to 20mm diameter and about 75mm long. Take your knife out and start shaping. Let your hands and wood guide you.
The results will be a single masterpiece.

almost forever, 1/2" wide, cut to 4" length ordinary wood dowel(s). Also have a few pipe "nails" somewhere in smoking room!

Thanks for the suggestions.
As for the whittling... I'm in no way gifted in that area, but I may give it a go.

Thanks for the suggestions. As for the whittling... I'm in no way gifted in that area, but I may give it a go. Well sitting down with a pipe in the jaw and a knife in the hand whittling away on a piece of wood letting the mind go blank is a pieceful feeling. It doesn't take skill nor a plan. Whatever happens, happens as it should. As time goes by and the stick changes shape. A sense of piece comes when you sit with the pipe and knife. The world's influence takes a back seat for this time. Country boys knows the piece.

I've got some of the 8Deco ones you can see on SP. Like everything else, nothing is ever within reach when my camera is in reach. It's a great subject. When I would put on a suit, the most important things were accessories, ties, shoes. If you have a nice tie (hopefully a nice shirt) and shoes someone is less likely to notice the lack of expense you may have put into a suit. I feel the tamper helps make the smoke more of a work of art. To me, this is probably more collectible (not for profit) than the pipes and lighters.

I have maded some copper faced antler ones for friends, but mostly prefer and use ones I make out of twigs. I like a slanted tamper face and can easily fabricate what I need with my pocket knife. They hold up well, are free and if lost, don't really matter.

I have 3 briar tampers won on a Tim West auction. Don't know if he made them. A few pipe nails and a Mr. Brog combo tool. When a mini-meer broke, I put a trimmed pipe nail head in the acrylic stem.

muttandjeff, I have two tampers exactly like yours. I love them. Cheap and you can sand them down to use as a scraper if you want to.

Here are some of my tampers. My favorite one is the one on the lower left; it is just a cheap Chinese one that I got on Ebay. I like it because it is longer than most and it is light and not bulky. It also doubles as a cigar poker.

Not all that fancy, but it's my favorite tamper. The 8deco can be found at smokingpipes.com rather cheaply. It's a nice and long piece of bamboo and has a brass foot that has holes in it so you can draw while tamping the ember. I love it, but it's a little long for travel maybe. I like that. I may have to add one or two to my next order.

I only have one tamper I paid more than a dollar for. Bought it at a Tinder box several decades ago, but I remember it was called a "dolphin." I prefer the nail on the left.

haebar - the description on the tamper packet says, 'makes pipe smoking easy'...I never knew that it was my TAMPER that was my problem all along. Once I get my hands on a Yello-Bole, gone are the relights and a I'll look forward to a perfect smoke every time.

I mentioned above, the tampers I have made, and had forgotten to mention the ones I hammer out of large nails. Recently I have even made some out of antique square nails. I also have the first Czech tool I bought with my first pipe 38 years ago. I have one Sheffield pipe tool, a Brebbia tool and all those twigs. I have given away all the nail and antler tools.

I don't have any updated pictures but I've collected "fancy" tampers as long as I've been collecting pipes and have dozens of them that I keep at hand.

I had a great ebony wood tamper that was given to me by one of the Pipesmagazine.com guys. I left it and my lighter on the table at the pipe shop, and someone took it.

As much as I love my 8deco tampers, I do enjoy whittling some from time to time. I find it relaxing and I learned how not to cut my fingers anymore. I have a thing about 410 shotguns, and have a couple of them. The stinking shells cost way too much, so I don't use them all that much, but I find that the spent shells make for a nice tamper. I usually whittle a small branch of whatever I find laying around, and super glue them into the shell.

The wooden ones at the top are made by John R and along with my Czech tools what I use everyday at work, I like the fact that I can roll the round tamper between my fingers as I tamp, it gives me a better feel for consitency sake. The silver one in the center slides into the aluminum tube, stamped "made in England" The buttom one doubles as a nice snuff spoon and can dip into a tap box if I don't want to do the anatomical taking of snuff. That middle one has a slot in the end allowing the user to fold the legs and provide a handle in order to get a better purchase on the blade. All of these Implements are Solingen made in Germany, with the exception of the Japanese scissors, I bought them at a brick and mortar auction for a low bid, along withs some nice pipes and Edgeworth High grade Slices. Prior to getting the cigar cutters, I had always used the cheapo frrebie giveaways that are now dedicated to cutting coins from rope tobacco. I was told that the notch on the end of the largest cigar cutter is for pulling the nails from the cigar boxes, and the blade for cutting through the tax stamps back in the day when that was the norm.
