The tamper is a tine off of a deer antler I found with a 9mm shell casing epoxied on.

I have a couple of Snake tampers. (Snake is a guy on another forum that makes custom tampers) one figural sterling silver, and a bunch of odds and ends pipe tools. I mostly like the slim bamboo one like shown above. You can always pick up an antler and cartridge case anywhere around here, but I am guessing that you don't have that option.

I have several made from scrap pieces of briar...one in particular has plateau on one side. Very handsome. Another carved by a member on another forum and last but used the most is a 62grm turned piece of stainless with a matching scoop also turned and stainless. Sorry I don't have pics of these.

More great samples. That lightning one is pretty neat.

Nice...too bad you can't capture lightning in that wood though, you would have a dual purpose tool.

I own two fairly rare Peterson tampers with Sherlock Holm's bust(metal) topping a clear colored tamper. Each came in a nice small leather pouch made for the tamper.

I use a spent .416 Rigby case for a tamper. Before that, I was using a spent .45-70 case. I wear a vest all the time, and keep a small knife, the case and my lighter in the bottom left pocket. The lighter has a pipe insert, of course.

I have a couple of very nice hand-made tampers gifted to me, and I love them as "art objects".
In practical terms, I use the $1.00 aluminum pipe nail.
Trying to find my way using my new IM Corona Pipe Master built-in pipe tool.
Maybe an old dog can learn new tricks.

Empty shell cases are something I always have plenty of, so if I loose one, I just pick up another and drop it in my pocket.

When I'm working in the garage I use a 3" wood screw. Plenty of them around.

I have a few of the Czech tools but seeing some of these tampers give me some insperation to make a couple. I might have to try and do something in copper since I have a lot of scrap pieces laying around.

3" decking screws or 2 1/2" natural finish golf tees mostly. Have 8Deco, Rogers, Dunhill, don't pick them up very often.

Here is a pretty rustic one I made out of a maple twig, a copper penny and a piece of copper ground wire. I hammered the copper wire out on an anvil and then contoured and polish it to a handy spoon shape with an edge about like a butter knife. Crude but very useful. Took me about 20 minutes. And a shot of the infamous MM smoking phallus when much newer.

And here is one of my antler tine tampers. I give all of these away. I need to go out and pick up some more shed antlers. A copper penny is mounted with a brass counter-sunk screw and gorilla glue. I need to find some copper screws. I sand and polish the penny to fit the contour of the antler. I got in a hurry on this one and ground some antler away. I tried staining it a dark color, thus the two tone look at the base. I tape them off now and go slower.

Got a bunch of tampers that I use...some of briar, tuned metal, branches of unusual appearance that I've made into tampers...about 20 in all. Have to take some pictures tomorrow...then I'll post them as I like each and every one. I've gifted a few to friends who tell me they use them. I like to vary what I use with my pipes. I prefer to use wooden ones for my meers so that they don't scratch the inside. Got one that looks a lot like a dogs' face...found it after the storm that went through here (hurricane). Pictures tomorrow, if anyone is interested...what else have I got to do.
