Out and about I may carry a wooden long golf tee, an aluminum pipe nail, a rock that works on most of my cobs but my every day pocket tool is a Languile and I do have a few others. banjo

I have accumulated a lot of tampers over the years, but I still use a Czech tool almost exclusively. Nothing seems to replace it.

Not all that fancy, but it's my favorite tamper. The 8deco can be found at smokingpipes.com rather cheaply. It's a nice and long piece of bamboo and has a brass foot that has holes in it so you can draw while tamping the ember. I love it, but it's a little long for travel maybe. I've been using one of these for quite a while now, too. I really like it and highly recommend giving it a shot. The concave end makes for easy rounding of the tobacco and the holes are nice to draw through as you are tamping. I don't mind the length. I set it in the center console of my car and makes it easy to find without taking my eyes off the road while driving.. I think it is a great design.

I would like to find a resource for the bottom piece, so I could turn a piece of nice hard wood for it.

I have several made from scrap pieces of briar...one in particular has plateau on one side. Very handsome. Another carved by a member on another forum and last but used the most is a 62grm turned piece of stainless with a matching scoop also turned and stainless. Sorry I don't have pics of these. Took some pictures of the tampers I have made.... Bottom one is my porch tamper...stays on the porch, above it is a pine twig with an interesting texture, above that are some more. Bottom one is a piece of wood I found in Texas, then a briar one, another twig, a maller one using the same wood. Briar (3), turned steel, one from a friend on another forum, and lastly one from Josh. Some more in there...got a lot of tampers here on the homestead.

Thanks, Paddy. I found alot of branches and twigs that offered themselves to be something other than debris. One piece that I didn't take a picture of is a branch end that looks exactly like a dogs head...found it right next to where my 3 deceased pups are buried. They have a genuine marked and flowered gravesite...all three lined up next to each other...surrounded by concrete edging. I made a promise to them that they would never be without a home...even when they had gone over the Rainbow Bridge. I feel their presence when I am back there in a separate part of my property dedicated to them. I keep it clean and leaf free so that they know that they are always thought of...and will be loved forever...as long as my wife are alive.
I enjoy making tampers...only requires a "silver pipe nail" or a cut piece of either roofing nail or 4" nail that I cut and use one end for the tamper and the other end as a scraper. Gives me something to do and I like to gift them as well...gave 2 to Josh, and I think he uses them...just a simple offering of my friendship.

Walt, I think you and me are on the same page with twig tampers. They are my favorite. Those are all very cool. The all wood ones are really pretty.

Thanks, Don...making my own tampers gives me a reason to go out in the yard and enjoy the flora and fauna...lots of squirrels, birds and bees..several hawks and owls too. At night there is a chorus of owls talking to each other...sometimes when they are real close...they can make me jump...they are really loud when they hoot.

We have a great horned owl that hangs out around the neighborhood. I love that bird. He does give me a start once in a while. We have a lot of rabbits, foxes, hawks and squirrels. Not enough bats, songbirds or hummingbirds. I will be working on that.

Other than my index finger and a pocket screwdriver not much. I have purchased many Czech tools and someday I will find them, sometimes I think the Borrowers are living with me. But you guys have some nice looking tampers for sure.

I’ve done that here in NC and filmed many of their feeding frenzies and family growth, extremely intriguing.

I use the 2 from Walt about 75% of the time. 1 stays in the car and it gets used daily. I have a different one from him that is flat and wide and gets used when I pack almost all of my bowls Other than that I have a 4" nail that I heated the point end and flattened it like a spade with a hammer. That one is in my pocket at all times, even when I'm not smoking.
I'd take some pictures but my bed is incredibly comfortable tonight.
I need to start making some more.

We have never attracted any at our current home with feeders. Only in the last two years have I started to hear them in the neighborhood. Time to try again. There are a lot of plants that will help to bring them in too. I also plan on putting some bat boxes up.

Here's a work in progress tamper I'm whittling. I'm pretty new to this world, so this has been fun. Looks a bit like an Easter island statue. I'm impressed.

I like it! I've seen a few spirit face tampers displayed on pipe boards that I've wanted. Off topic but you may be interested/inspired by the great briar spirit pipes of Roy Webb.

I use a golf tee from time to time. Other than that, it’s a Czech tool

I use a golf tee from time to time. Other than that, it’s a Czech tool I'm the exact opposite. I use a golf tee most of the time, but a Czech tool the rest of the time.

Very nice, Jack...I like the idea of the Briar Spirit...was the theme of a pipe maker/friend of mine...called himself Briar Spirit and when he was carving he managed to get the most out of a piece of briar...said he could "feel" the grain...I believe he was right, judging by his pipes.

I just finished my "tree spirit" tamper. Lots of carving, sanding, and staining. He's not fancy, but he's one of the first things that I've ever carved, so I'm pretty happy. Comments and constructive criticism are certainly welcome! Cheers, JD

Looks good, Jack. Keep on carving, you can only get better! Try using some of Fiebings stains...saddle tan would look good on that tamper...then give it a good coat of Dura Clear High Gloss Polyurethane Gloss Varnish...it will make it really look great! You can find the stain and varnish at any Hobby Lobby. Not expensive and will last you quite a while. That is what I used on the cobs that I stained...check it out on modified cobs thread.

Cool idea. At first I thought you were going for an Easter Island theme there.
