Am I the only one that finds it annoying when Czech tools get loose with use? It annoys me so much that I almost use pipe nails exclusively now. It happens less with actual Czech tools than like tools by other manufacturers.

Justin ^^^^^^^^ when that happens give the center collar a light tap with a hammer, your Czech tool will be tight once again.
Just don’t beat the 💩 out of it....lol

Just saw this thread. I also have a pretty good number of Snake tampers. IMO, Snake tampers cannot be beat and are the tops of tampers. Here they are:

Looks good, Jack. Keep on carving, you can only get better! Try using some of Fiebings stains...saddle tan would look good on that tamper...then give it a good coat of Dura Clear High Gloss Polyurethane Gloss Varnish...it will make it really look great! You can find the stain and varnish at any Hobby Lobby. Not expensive and will last you quite a while. That is what I used on the cobs that I stained...check it out on modified cobs thread. Hey, thank you. I'll have to look for that stain. I wasn't super happy with the stuff I had. I'm kinda worried about polyurethane on it, though. You think it might burn off?

That's really really cool jackdiamond. Does it have a metal bottom? A thumb tack works well if it doesn't and you'd like one.

Does that mean he can't get any worse? 😂😂 Only kidding, I know that's not what you meant.

While not fancy, I’ve managed to hang on to a Rodgers knife for 15+ years. I just love the thing. One of these days I’m going to have Snake make me a pretty one.

Started two days ago, in different stages due to high heat epoxy resin I used. Final coat I mixed multi-colored metallic flecks. Made this Tamper for a female piper back in NY. She’s going to be pleased👌👍👍

I just finished my "tree spirit" tamper. Lots of carving, sanding, and staining. He's not fancy, but he's one of the first things that I've ever carved, so I'm pretty happy. Comments and constructive criticism are certainly welcome! Cheers, JD Love it!

I've looked at dozens of Snake's tamper on PSF, here's the one that got me to reach for my wallet. I don't know if it's his largest but it's gotta be close. Does anyone know what these Tiffany & Co "tampers" from the collection really are?

I use a fancy tamper. I saw what you said about your Czech pipe tool. I also own a Czech tamper. But the keyword there is TAMPER. It is not a mere "tool". It is a refined instrument for pipe smoking, created by the pipe smoking geniuses in the Czechloslovakia of old. My tool is vintage, in fact antique. It is rumoured to be over 50 years old, and worth tens of thousands of dollars. This is an approximation of what my antique tamper looks like. I can't divulge the true images, because you may be able to discover its location therein. Since this is such an expensive item, a true "Holy Grail" of pipe smoking, I cannot risk this.

That snake tamper is beautiful. We're those Tiffany ones cutlery handles?

"We're those Tiffany ones cutlery handles?"
No. They are fairly small. The answer can be found in a scene in Breakfast at Tiffany's. I don't think I have a picture but I've got a teeny tiny sterling silver Tiffany "Chezch" style pipe tool in the collection too.

Re: Metal bottoms to tampers: Completely unnecessary, BUT, quite nice in the aesthetics department. (Even soft wood won't ignite when used in normal tamping - though you could char it significantly if you tried).

Stopped by my son’s two days ago to pick up a few items. This was one, the last Tamper I made using a pocket knife and sandpaper to shape. “ THE SNAKE “ I know, I know, no other comments necessary 😜🤪🤪😂😂

Started working on some tampers about a month ago so thought I would document the journey so far. - Mark I, originally used for scratching, picking and pointing. Mark II, after my wife and I finished up a bottle of wine. Mark III, done at two am, after not sleeping for 48 hours. Mark IV, finally getting somewhere, still need to work on the final coat. - According to my youngest the Mark V, needs to have diamonds and gold dust on it. Told her I would work on it.
