I have often thought about an airbag deploying with a pipe in your mouth... having the mouthpiece shoved out the back of your neck could really ruin your day. Fortunately for me, only airbags in my commercial vehicle are under the seat and under the suspension. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/8699778/?i=2&from=/7723086/related

I've never smoked a pipe in my car for fear of that happening.

A few weeks ago, I fell on my face while walking. My nose broke my fall. Fortunately, I didn’t have a pipe in my mouth. I now have a fear of smoking and walking.

...actually experienced airbag+pipe+eyeglasses a year ago: not pretty... Sorry to hear about your experience with airbags. I was a Volunteer Fireman & EMT for many years, I’ve seen it all. One gentleman was enjoying a cigar while driving....needless to say in his fender bender first thing I noticed we had to remove the cigar that was enlarged in his throat. Pipe smokers lose their teeth sometimes when an airbag deploys and glasses can cause loss of eye sight and tear the bridge of your nose. One must be rather cautious while driving!!! However, just an airbag deploying ( especially a defective airbag ) improperly can take one’s life.

Ronv69, I choose a nosewarmer while driving for just this reason.

lonecoyote, I believe that trailboss' avatar actually is Jonathan Winters. Probably a still from the movie It's A Mad, Mad, Mad World where his character was a truck driver. One of the funniest movies ever made IMO.

One of the funniest movies ever made IMO. Yup, I know it is Johnathan Winters and I too remember the movie. That movie had some great cast. Could you imagine the cost today to make a similar movie....with what actors and actresses get paid per-movie.

Kinda funny, just read these recent posts while sitting under a freeway overpass smoking my pipe....If I don’t turn the A/C down to #1 when parked in the shade, I get frozen on this 110 degree day. The Arizona sun is pretty relentless heading into summer.

Every once an awhile I see a youngster but nor always with their bare feet up on the front dash or hanging partly out the window on the passager side. I imagine they could play second base if the airbag would unfortunately go off. As in actually be the second base.

No seat belts, air bags, bicycle helmets, we rode in the back of pickups and on our mothers laps, climbed trees, fought with sticks, shot our guns, played with lawn darts, and so much more.

I have heard of people driving around with their purse dogs on their lap, get into an accident with an airbag deployment, and the dogs legs have to get removed from the chest.

In the UK dogs must be strapped in and not allowed to wonder round the car. Not that many people don't ignore that rule.

Head trauma can show up much later in life. One indisputable sign is the irrational behavior of putting a cigar in your pipe.
