One of my sisters living in Texas went into a junk shop and decided to buy me a Royal Danish 991R stamped Made in Denmark. It has a crown on the stem. So, I know it's a Stanwell second and it was made before the pipe carving was moved to Italy. I have been searching to find out what the shape is but haven't found anything about a 991R (I'm pretty sure the R means rusticated, though.) Any Stanwell or Royal Danish experts on here?

Perhaps Stanhill might be able to help you out in this. Looks like a nice find though once it's cleaned up a bit.

Nice pipe; it should be a good smoker.

Your Stanwell looks like a 04M- 'M' fpr Military Mount. Here is my Royal Danish 04M.
The shape 91 can be seen below. The prefix 9- indicates a sandblated version. The -R is a large-sized pipe.

Now I'm confused. Is it an O4M or is it a shape 91? Or is it an 04M in the shape of a 91? Looking at the catalogue now I can see the difference in the stems. Will have to examine it good when it arrives to see the difference in the bowls. I'm guessing it was produced some time after 1970 since the catalogue is in full color after that time.

As can be seen in my photo, shape 91 is quite different in design. Both designed by Sixten Ivarsson.

And therein lies my confusion. If it is a shape 04 why is it stamped 991R

I hope that you'll write a follow-up when you receive the pipe.

I was just lucky, as I have both pipes in my collection.

I hope that you'll write a follow-up when you receive the pipe. I'll post some photos once I have the pipe in hand and do a follow up once it's cleaned. I just can't understand how a company like Stanwell would miss-stamp a pipe. On the other hand, my sister may have confused the pipe numbers.

Got the pipe. It’s the 991r which looks like a squat tomato or brandy. I told her she sent me the wrong photo. Shame because I liked the 04 better.

Every time I find a descent pipe at an antique store it's a Scandia, which I understand is also a Stanwell second. I have several and they are always good smokers.

Actually, it's Sixten Ivarsson's Stanwell version of his 'Ukulele' from the fifties.

I will start the restoration process this afternoon after I take some good “ before” photos.

So I always assumed when a pipe was "topped" that something like a band saw was used. Never thought of a sander. This is going to be an interesting thread.

After two days worth of work, this is where I'm at with the Royal Danish. I still haven't finished the rim. Haven't decided where to go. top of bowl: Right Side: Front: Left Side: Finished Stem

So far so good. Great stem work. See if you can round the outer side of the rim just a little.

When I've done this, I lay out a sheet of sandpaper on a breadboard and grasping the pipe firmly, sand it counter clockwise, periodically checking progress until I get the rim where I want it.

Actually, I use a 320 grit sanding sponge from Lowes. Didn't want to risk taking too much briar off with a belt sander.
