I agree with mr brog and the pearwood. I think pipedia has a section on different woods. I'll see if I can find it. I also hear corn cobs are good bowl material too... Who knew!!? Edit: here's the pipedia site for alternative wood... pipedia.org/wiki/Alternative_Woods_Used_For_Pipe_making I ask because I may carve a pair for Me and JR. I’m a bit of a carver. Nothing fancy just a personal touch. I tried that out of some oak firewood...When I drilled the hole right through, I decided that carving a pipe wasn't for me. I put the tools down and walked away, thankful that I didn't injure myself.

I haven’t lost a finger yet, but lots of blood and skin have been sacrificed to the carving gods. Lol

Several here have mentioned Mountain Laurel but, be aware they used it as an alternative to mesquite back in the 40's because all imports of briar were banned during the war years, not to mention many got sick from smoking mountain laurel pipes and they ended up discontinuing the use of it in pipes. Not everyone got sick though but, why take a chance?

So is Cherry ok? Or is there a known level of toxicity with it?

So is Cherry ok? Or is there a known level of toxicity with it? Not that I've heard of but, sometimes it's just the person. I know of a well known pipe maker that can't smoke a Olive wood pipe because of what I believe to be an allergy. Obviously this is a rare occurrence but, it can happen.

I don't know about olive wood, but my local pipe shop has a beautiful strawberry wood pipe. Forgot the manufacturer. I may just break down and head over there to buy it. Has anyone here had any luck with strawberry wood?

Has anyone here had any luck with strawberry wood? If it's not too expensive, might as well try it and see what it's like. Then you could report back and let us know.

I have a pipe made from Osage Orange by a very good friend on another forum. It’s one of my better smoking pipes. Been smoking it for about two years without any issues.
