Hi folks! I'm really looking forward to diving deep into these forums, as I am a brand new pipe hobbyist, and, like many, I'm finding my way in the world. I thought I should share a little about why I am interested in pipe smoking, and how I got started. I'm sure it will be somewhat familiar to many of you. From the research I've done so far, it seems like there are a lot of common themes in our briar brother and sister's beginnings.
First off, I suppose I should tell you about myself. I'm a 30ish father of two from Western New York. I work constantly... but in between the daily grind, feeding babies, changing diapers, working at my wonderful marriage (no sarcasm... I happened to marry the perfect woman,) and finding a little time to sleep, I haven't had much time to devote to hobbies or interests. BC (before children) I was an avid fisherman and hunter, and I like to think that down the road I will get back to it. For now, my busy life keeps my chain short, which is perfectly fine by me.
Lately, brain clutter has been piling up. Between the kids, a new promotion at work, and various other life changes, I have been feeling like my mind is working at max capacity. Sometimes it's almost as if I need to permanently delete a mental file to be able to save new information in there! Sitting still in the woods, tuned into every small snap of twig and rustle of leaves while I awaited the arrival of a deer, often afforded me the opportunity to reflect inward and find a centering peace. I relied on this for years to get my head straightened out and rid myself of stress. The discipline of trout fishing... the patience, quiet, focus, finesse... often did the same for me. Now, of course, those opportunities are few and far between.
About a month ago, while scrolling through YouTube, I came across a video done by George Bruno, a wise, bearded piper from Pennsylvania. I was intrigued by his take on pipe smoking, and its relation to slowing down life and giving great thought to your problems and worries. I've now watched dozens of his videos, as well as others by Eddie Gray (The Pipe Nook) and many others who subscribe to the YTPC, the YouTube Pipe Community. While I am slowly working up the nerve to post videos of my own, I must say that I admire these folks tremendously, and owe my early pipe smoking success to them.
So, I finish this initial post while puffing some Dunhill Early Morning Pipe out of a pear root pipe that I just finished carving this afternoon. I'm excited to start my journey. Please let me know if you have similar experiences. Thank you for reading!
Smokily yours, WoolyPiper

It sounds like you are off to a great start, and fortunate to have a medium that did not exist when I started. Time will come when you can teach the crumbcrunchers the skills that you had acquired before they arrived on the scene. They will treasure the time, even if they decide fishing and hunting isn't for them...I am guessing that they will. I only say that part because I know a father that is an avid hunter that was frustrated beause one son doesn't share the same passion. I think that it was providential that I was ble to discuss the matter with him and it really helped him see it differently.Paul dips and smokes cigarettes, so there is that! You are on the right track, I look forwaard to your contributions here.

My story's different. In west Philadelphia born and raised, on the playground was where I spent most of my days. . . wait, on second thought, that was someone else.

Welcome from Ireland. My story is very similar to yours. I learned a lot from YouTube, but so much more in this forum. It's a great place to ask questions and have some interaction that is somewhat missing in YouTube.
Stick around and not only will you learn loads, but you'll establish great friendships.
I wish you well in your endeavours.

Welcome from East Tennessee! You are fortunate to have the internet with many piping resources like YouTube, etc. When I was getting into pipe smoking, I had to get my information person to person or from the written word with publications like The Pipe Smoker's Ephemeris, books by Richard Carleton Hacker, and whatever else I could find to read.

I'm old enough to be your father, so my story is somewhat different, but I can relate. Warm welcome from the SF Bay.

Welcome from South Georgia. I'm roughly the same age as you and picked up the pipe about 3 months ago for some of the same reasons.
You've found a great group of people with a plethora of information here. This place is like no other.

adding my greets/welcome & hope you continue to enjoy the hobby. Thanx for your detailed report on your life so far (long time ago experienced same). Now probably have "seniority" here as nobody else has claimed to "beat" 12/40. You'll find lotsa help with any questions you might have. So maybe can claim "fairly close neighbor".

For me it was just always looking up to the old men I would pass in the parks, and in front of libraries, carefully packing their English blends, and looking stately while taking slow draws from their ancient looking briar pipes. Youtube just wasn't a thing yet when I started piping - this was around 2003. I'm not sure youtube existed yet!
Both of my grandfathers and both of my great grandfathers were pipe smokers, and that had something to do with it also. I know I have a more refined palate and a taste for more expensive pipes than they had. They were the type to smoke a very basic Virginia blend out of a mail pouch or even a cherry blend - something I cannot stand. People keep telling me to try Cult's cherry blend, so maybe there is something out there for me. I am a dedicated fine latakia and English blend smoker. I was never into aromatics. But it is nice to continue the family tradition, regardless.
I was never afforded the luxury of having a stable wife or children. I suppose it is not too late for me. I have been shifting back and forth between the US and Thailand for two decades and I am finally rooting myself in Bangkok. I have been talking to a pretty, young 30-something single mother, who works as a maid for a year now. I may be settling into the father role more soon than I realise. I have several joint conditions and a spinal injury and the weather there is just perfect for me.
Regardless, welcome. You'll find that pipe smokers are really great people. I like cigars, too. But the cigar crowd attracts a lot more edgy, derisive people, than pipes do. I am not sure why, but the cigar scene is definitely more like that.

Welcome! I'm not much older than you, but my story is somewhat similar. I've been on and off pipes for probably 15 years, but mostly off. I decided I needed to give it another go, a couple of months ago, and am enjoying myself immensely. I needed a manageable hobby, a small amount of reflection and relaxation in my life, and the pipe really fits that bill. Except maybe the manageable part, due to continuous orders of tobacco and pipes coming in. I need to purchase a beureau just for my pad/tad!

Hello and welcome!
I find my pipe helps me focus on what is more important in life. I let more of the silly crap go when I smoke. Your kids may never fully understand you or your hobbies. They will notice.
