This is one of the downsides of buying online. It is plainly beautiful, but the geometry is so complex none of us can imagine how it feels in-hand.
To buy a $1,200 pipe in such a peculiar shape, I think I would have to go in person to the pipe dealer to see how it handles.

I always do the same calculation every time I see pipes this expensive:
How much Sutliff could I buy after a bag of MM seconds instead of this?
In this case, this pipe is worth about 36 pounds of tobacco.
I'll take the tobacco please. 😁

I’m no stranger to high grade pipes, pieces of smoking art or that maker but even though I’m a very eclectic buyer of pipes they must push my buttons, be smokable and in that vein it’s not just to give me a great smoke, it has to be comfortable in hand like all my other pipes are, I don’t think that particular pipe would be comfortable in anyone’s hand, just my way of looking at it. banjo

It's artwork and it's beautiful just my opinion and no I wouldn't smoke it Wait! It's not that I wouldn't smoke it because it's a work of art, all pipes are a form of art. I wouldn't smoke it because it's not my style.

If I ever drop $1,200 on a pipe you'd better believe I'm going to smoke it, as I would drive a car that cost $120,000. That said, once you get to making pop star or movie actor money, you simply may not have had the time to drive all 27 Ferraris at your five houses. If I ever spend that much on a pipe I had better be able to clench it comfortably. That one might be a bit difficult!

I wouldn't purchase one; however, if given I'd fire it up.

That’s cool but it’s really complicated. I like simple shapes.

Reminds of that Mexican lady working at an art gallery in New York City story. At night she's cleaning, sees some assorted piles of trash bags and what not. Well, she does her job by collecting up everything and disposing of it all. Next morning, turns out the Gallery is missing their art worth an enormous amount of money! True sory. I don't mean the pipe is trash by any means but the art part goes way too far for me on this pipe. Maybe I'm just not sophisticated enough. . I smoke a lot of Danish freehands and I even catch myself sometimes thinking, hell, I'm just smoking a piece of wood with a stem on it, they didn't even finish the damn thing. Lol

It is fine craftsmanship but I wouldn't buy one. If I was given one I'm not even sure I'd smoke it. It's a piece for display, for sure.

I imagine pipe collectors are not dissimilar to fountain pen collectors. If you purchase a very expensive limited edition piece or one of a kind by a famous craftsman, you generally put the item away to maintain its pristine condition and collector value. Several thousand dollars and up is not unheard of for true collector edition pens, and the same with pipes. Collectors have a plentiful number of the cheaper variety for daily use.

Things that are never used are worthless to society. Yes, I would smoke it.

For that much money, I would definitely smoke it where every one around would see it. Of course, if they asked how much it cost, I would lie so they don't try to get me commited to the hotel with padded walls, lol.

I smoke every pipe I have. I'll admit, I've invested in some nice pipes. but I'll tell you what, I buy them to smoke them, not to adore them.
