I will be the first to admit I am VERY guilty of this. I know that pipe smoking is supposed to be a "slow down and smell the roses" type of thing, but as a former cigarette smoker, I smoke rather furiously, and just a tad on the hot side. I've been doing this for over 14 years, so I doubt I am going to stop any time soon. It's not uncommon for me to finish a bowl in 15-20 minutes, even a good sized pot. It's impossible for me to break this habit, it is ingrained in me, trust me I've tried! Fast smoking is typically a neophyte error, but I have noticed that there are actually speed smoking competitions (!), so I know I am not the only one!

I have to really work at smoking slowly. When I'm not paying attention and my pipe gets hot, I set it down for a few minutes to let it cool a bit, and then resume making a point to sip slowly.

I would say I smoke at a moderate pace, but I've no frame of reference to know what a good pace is.

For me it depends on the blends. I have a few that definitely need to be smoked at a very slow cadence and those I can push without getting overly hot, which at times I smoke through without a re-light. Just tamping and a light tap to remove top ash.

I do tend towards the fast side unless I pay close attention to my pace.Unfortunately, most times when I take a pipe break I've a lot on my mind so I end up finishing a bowl quicker than i expected to.

I usually have to consciously make the effort to pace myself.

It depends on what I'm doing. When I'm in the garden I'm pretty busy and most of the time it's just dangling in my mouth. Same in the shed if I'm building something. 1 bowl will last forever and need a few relights. If I'm on the porch, and it's hot out, I smoke fast. If it's late in the day and the sun isn't beaming down on me, I make the conscience effort to smoke slow, taste it all and enjoy it.

Slow and steady wins this race and yields higher quality bowls.

It depends on the blend. The one blend that I always take my time and smoke slowly is Tudor Castle. It’s my favorite blend that I only smoke on special occasions or on holidays. I savor every puff. On other not so special blends I sometimes smoke at a rate that makes me appear like a speeding steam locomotive. This is dependent on the amount of taste the blend affords.

AJ Yeah, I've noticed that with the long ribbon cut blends, and twists, I tend to smoke those a lot slower than the blends with smaller cuts. The ribbon cut itself stays lit very nicely and leads itself to a nice mellow, long smoke. I am still a former cigarette smoker and I am not sure I will ever get over my original vicious "attack" mentality I have towards tobaccos.

The last time I put the timer on, I went 3:35 minutes on a 6x60 cigar.

Since I'm a predominently Va smoker, If I want taste the Vas and not get a leather tongue sip, sip, sip is the way i go. I also smoke my pipe while doing other things so set it down frequently and it goes out so I have to re-lite often but wooden matches are cheap enough!

Wish I could practice what I preach... but so much to do, so little time, day in day out, that my smokes are rarely relaxed with a slow pace as they should be. Gonna have to retire someday, sooner than later is hoped for.

I suppose it depends on the situation if I know I only have 30 minutes I pick a small bowl if I have an hour I pick a pipe with a larger Bowl but I suppose I have a faster than normal Cadence

Depends on where I am, what I'm doing and how hot it is....some days slow and steady, some days fast and loose.

I'm definitely working at slowing down too. Previous cigarette smoker here as well. I would say in my 6 weeks of piping, and at only a bowl a night or less, I've had only one smoke that I found the right cadence and didnt get bitten at all. I'm trying like hell to get back to that because the flavor was outstanding. Mostly smoking aromatics right now too, so I need to avoid overheating.

I think its okay to smoke fast as long as you control the heat. Smoking too hot causes sore throat and pipe damage. Its all about mastering how to properly pack your pipe and keep heat down to a minimum. I just love nicotine and tobacco so much that when I really get to smoking I get a "eat it" mentality. been like this for decades and it ain't changing!

I am slowing down more and more. I have a lot of interruptions so I am relighting more than I like.
I also find more flavor and enjoyment from a slower smoke.
It has been a process. As time and experience goes by I get better at extracting more enjoyment from my pipe.

Get a pouch of Borkum Riff, that will help slow you down some. I like their blends, but you have to go slow of they will bite back. Thanks to scrooge,I've a couple pouches and it is helping me to re-learn a slower cadence.
