The ribbons are slim, stringy and very moist. I suggest letting them dry.
Upon lighting, I note hay, a citrusy sweetness, some mild dry sour notes, and a light amount of smokiness. The Turkish and Orientals take center stage. They are mildly mouthwatering, tangy, a tad sweet, but more sour. In no way are they overwhelming. The Virginias compliment the Orientals with a soothing-like effect. There’s also a light amount of Latakia. It’s noticeable on lighting, tamping and randomly makes brief appearances.
SM is medium in body, and barely mild in nicotine. It burns at a moderate pace. It’s never harsh, no matter how quickly I puff.
This can be smoked at anytime of the day, although I prefer it as an early morning pipe. It’s been a staple in my rotation for many years.
For those looking to explore English/Oriental blends, Skiff Mixture is a good blend to try. It’s also a favorite of many light English/Oriental enthusiasts.

Sam, excellent review and your description is spot on! I have some stored, have not smoked this blend in a few years. Once I’m done with some of the many blends I have opened at the moment I will be opening a tin👌👍👍

Well done, Sam. I bought my first tin of Skiff at a very small B&M in Carnaby St in London in 1994. I've been a fan of SG since.

Sam, how would you say Skiff Mixture compares to Squadron Leader?

Sam, how would you say Skiff Mixture compares to Squadron Leader? I haven’t smoked Squadron Leader for at least four+ years. I used to smoke it regularly. From what I recall, the Orientals played a much lesser role, and there was more latakia, but not a lat bomb. I may order a tin to confirm this information.

I'm bullish on Skiff. I really like the sourness and is an all day smoke for me. Nice to read that it's appreciated by others. For what it's worth, Squadron Leader is 'smoky' and Skiff is 'sour' to my taste buds.

Thanks Sam. I like Squadron Leader, but have never tried Skiff Mixture. I have some speeding toward me in the US mail as I type this. I am a bit intrigued by the "sour" aspect you and zambini both refer to. Anyway--thanks again for the review.....

Sam, because of you and this thread S G Skiff Mixture will be the next tin I open, it’s been a while since I enjoyed this blend👍
It smokes excellent in 3 of my Oom Paul pipes, especially the Comoy’s Coronet I restored a while back.

Wolfman and zambini - have you tried Commonwealth? Curious how it compares to Skiff and SL.

@chico
Commonwealth is an interesting blend. It’s a 50/50 latakia/Virginia blend, no Orientals. It’s has a strong campfire smokiness, but the Virginia tempers it from being a ‘lat bomb’. It works best for me on a cold winter night.
Unlike SL or Skiff, the Latakia is always present and more powerful.

Thanks, Wolfman. This thread has made me realize that the only SG Lat blend I've smoked is SL (unless you count 1792). I need to remedy that!

Sam, great music with my headphones 🎧, thanks for posting. Your from NY, do you remember listening to Wolfman Jack, the well known popular radio DJ, “ on the air in NY “? Wolfman also lived in NC for many years. His full name.....Robert Weston Smith, even though he had a raspy voice, he was one of NY’s most popular radio DJ’s. My other favorite radio DJ’s from my era....Dan Ingram, originally from 77 WABC AM radio, who just passed away last month, may he RIP. Bruce Morrow known as “ cousin Brucie “, also Casey Kasem “ broadcasted coast to coast “, one definitely before your time but very popular.......Murray the K. Only one still with us is cousin Brucie.

I used to listen to 66 WNBC religiously, and I was a kid. I began listening to Imus when I was about 4 - my dad would have the radio on in the car. Soupy Sales did the mid-day shift, Stern was on from 3-7 and Wolfman was on overnight. I read his autobiography a few days before he died - July 1995. I remember Dan Ingram, and Cousin Brucie. Those were great years for AM radio. It’s so different now. I long for those days. 😔 Edit: Murray the K was before my time. But I listened to Casey Kasem. I lived in Soho from 1996-2003 and one of my neighbors, Bobby DeVito was Cousin Brucie’s actually cousin and driver.

One of my favorite Samuel Gawith blends. I find that the latakia and Orientals in the blends have a slight creaminess to them.

Good stuff Wolf, I was really surprised the 50% Lat wasn't more pronouced in Commonwealth and this may explain it.
