There are some things I’ve learned over the years about smoking a pipe. Most are common sense and are generally known. Hopefully you’ll find something new or something you’ve never considered. I’m sure there are many other things that you as a pipe smoker have learned but aren’t listed below. Please tell us about them. Below are 15 items that I feel will prove beneficial to anyone that takes pipe smoking seriously. These are not listed in order or by importance.
1. Always clean your pipe after each bowl smoked.
2. Never remove stem while pipe is still warm from smoking.
3. Never use a torch lighter to light a pipe.
4. Keep pipes stored out of direct sunlight.
5. Never leave your pipe on the dash of a vehicle.
6. Never take a leak while smoking a pipe.
7. Never allow anyone to handle your favorite pipe.
8. Never immerse your pipe in water.
9. Never tell your spouse or SO how many pipes you own or how much they cost.
10. Always use a reamer to remove cake from the chamber of your pipe. Never use a knife.
11. Never ask another pipe smoker to allow you to smoke one of his pipes.
12. Always offer a fellow pipe smoker a bowl of tobacco whenever one visits you in your home.
13. Never bang your pipe on any object to remove ash. Use the pick on your pipe tool.
14. Never make derogatory remarks about another pipe smoker’s pipe or collection.
15. Never admit to having smoked or had in your possession CB Grape to anyone if you’ve been smoking a pipe for more than five years.

Good advice.
I agree about not smoking another's pipe...
However, the interchangeable stems on the mm cobs means that a beginner can bring a pipe to a seasoned piper, who can pack and light and get the thing going (with their own stem), then swap out the stem and hand over to the beginner who can at least experience what a pipe should be like. Would help as a baseline for future smokes.

If he likes it I give him one of the new Legends that I have and warn him about the nasty taste of the stem burning away as it breaks in.

Agreed, and maybe I'm too new at this and maybe I don't have enough pipes to share and and maybe my opinion will change but at this juncture in time I'm going to have to pass on sharing a pipe. I think it's Noble that people keep other bits and allowed new smokers to try it out, but I don't know any new smokers that are coming to a novice rookie like me for advice LOL

I keep a bunch of cobs around and I have a 'friends and family' pipe (for veteran smokers) for instances like this. The small investment solves all the problems and you're a hero. I once had a client come over and I pulled out my pipe and he said had he known I smoked a pipe, her would have brought his. I asked would you like to smoke, to which he replied, sure. I went inside, got my 'friends and family' pipe (put on a rubber gizmo above) and some tobacco, brought it out and the delight in his eyes made it all worthwhile. Today we're very good friends. I use the cobs for noobs who want to "give it a try".

AJ, GREAT THREAD....... I must agree with all 15 that you abide by.....especially #15.....I’d never want to smoke that grape crap! I’ll add.......
16. I always change a filter after two uses, know matter what.
17. wipe down completely every pipe after each use with a microfiber cloth and my mixture of bee’s wax & mineral oil. I’ve never had to deal with any oxidation on a stem.
18. Clean the draft with a bristle cleaner after each use.

19. If you smoke your pipe at a cigar lounge, make a purchase, the owner has bills to pay...not a bad idea to tip the staff either, especially if they serve drinks.

In a conversation with a young man just starting in the hobby, he made some comment about about loading a bowl and sharing. I told him to think of smoking his pipe like he does kissing his wife/girlfriend/SO.You don't want your buddy smooching all over them or it. I'd add never insult others choice in tobacco. Just because you don't like, there are people who do.(CB Grape is the exception )

I like fried squirrel covered in a “slow” gravy with homemade biscuits but please don’t mention any cooked rodent in the same sentence with 1792. 🤮 AJ

I think if you are careful, you can use a torch lighter in a pinch (although I use zippos). If you are careful you can remove a stem from a warm pipe. If you are careful you can submerge a pipe in water briefly. If you are careful you can use a knife to ream out cake.
