I noticed on P&C that they have a note: This item no longer available.
Recently SP got a nice sized shipment in after there was sort of a run on VS. When they ran out of the pound bags the picture was still up, but showed their "not available" thing, which does not indicate "never again". However, there is no pic up for the pound bags anymore, but tins still available. I am surprised the blend lasted this long, but looks like it might be finally on its way out.

Did you get some before it went "POOF"?

Smoking Pipes has quite a bit of the 1.75 and 3.5 oz. But, the end is near and I doubt the supply lasts the year online.

Did you get some before it went "POOF"? I bought a tin of it first. Had never tried it before. I opened it immediately, smoked a bowl, and ordered a pound. It's really good, but not sure I would have felt I missed something had I never tried it.

Whatever is in stock and on the shelf is it, so I was told from a pipe smoker and employee of Smokingpipes. I read an article months ago the Syrian leaf will no longer be available. Another question JimInks might know for sure?!?!

The loss of McClelland is dear, but for me, largely, that was due to the short notice. Fortunately, the lead time for the loss of Dunhill, and HH Vintage Syrian, has been long. And, I'm cellaring appropriately (not crazy, but enough to enjoy). In a year or so, I'll be interested to see how Dunhill blends and HH Vintage Syrian are faring in the world of pipe tobacco angst.

If I recall correctly, Per Jensen said that the Syrian Latakia used in Vintage Syrian was from the 1970’s, they just had such a huge stockpile that it lasted for several years and it is getting down to the bottom.

I doubt that their Syrian was anything like that old. That would have been some pretty faded Latakia. More likely from the last big crops produced in the early 2000's. Also, MacBaren had announced that they would run out several years ago, but were able to keep producing it because they found new sources of sufficient quality to keep production going a year or so longer.

That’s what I read and it was confirmed by Smokingpipes when I asked a number of months ago. PS Makes total sense how sablebrush52 explains it.

PS I just looked at a tobacco spreadsheet and I have a few tins of HH Vintage Syrian and a few other tins using Syrian Latakia. I DON’T sell but will eventually trade, I will post when I’m ready.

I just checked and I have three sleeves plus a few loose tins in my stash. That ought to hold me.

The stock is gone; The Danish Pipe Shop has run out and can't get anymore. It's still available from Esterval's in Germany in both 100 grs and 50 grs tins; I just bought some and it was from 2016, so appearently they don't sell that much.

Also, MacBaren had announced that they would run out several years ago, but were able to keep producing it because they found new sources of sufficient quality to keep production going a year or so longer. I went back and listened to the Per Jensen interviews more to settle it with myself than anything. In the December 2013 interview, at that time he said that the Old Dark fired was from a 1974 crop. pipesmagazine.com/blog/radio-talk-show/the-pipes-magazine-radio-show-episode-67/In the March 2015 interview he said that the Syrian Latakia used in Vintage Syrian was from 1983. pipesmagazine.com/blog/radio-talk-show/the-pipes-magazine-radio-show-episode-131/Maybe he was just referencing back to when they started putting aside the leaf, and later harvests were added into the pipeline? It was good to re-listen to the shows, a couple takeaways: Harald Halberg, in a long line of a tobacco family going back to the 1820's chose to hire a CIO, because he chose to be out in the field sourcing the leaf and visiting the places that supply the product, and he always has on hand at least two years of raw product for production. When Robert Mugabe took over in Zimbabwe in 1980 and took the land from whte farmers to re-distribute to black people the source evaporated overnight...the new landowners for whatever reason had nothing to bring to market. I hope that there will be another Halberg in the family line (with the same passion) to carry on after Harald is gone...the family business is pretty diverse, I hope that it doesn't go the way of Dunhill at some point. Use Google Translate...www.halberg-as.dk/

Charlie, I definitely wouldn’t enjoy smoking an ‘83 Latakia, it would be way to mellow....almost flat. I know someone that recently opened a 20 year old tin of Black Frigate and he was totally disappointed. After just 2 years of aging Black Frigate this cake is extremely mellow and a great after dinner smoke👍

Maybe that is why I like Vintage Syrian over getting punched in the face with a lat bomb?

I don’t smoke Latakia forward blends without a minimum of 3 years of aging. Smokes much more mellow, enjoyable cool sweet woodsy aroma and taste. I don’t care for the palate after taste when smoking a fresh Lat bomb! We’re using the word “ bomb “ in so many threads, I’m surprised I haven’t received an email from the Feds already....lol

I think it's conceivable that it was that old, considering that "a little under half of the volume" of the blend is supposed to be Syrian. That much fresh Lat would be more like Pirate Kake, This thread is making me want to smoke some again....

SP still has it.
I only got one but I may buy another.
I just bought the big one and put it in a bail lid. It'll last forever because I only smoke it about once a week in a small bowl. This is a very nice smoke.

For the record all the stores represented by the links I posted above appear to have the blend in stock.

I'm really surprised it's still so widely available.

I'm really surprised it's still so widely available. A lot of smokers stocked up on it when the word first got out that Syrian was running out. So there's a fair amount of stock just sitting.
