I enjoy reading the reviews while smoking and sometimes of the tobacco I'm smoking. Sometimes I am amazed at what can be tasted by others but not by me. Best to smoke it yourself for your own "review" as to whether or not you like any given tobacco. To each their own and everyone's taste is going to be different so the review may or may not help you.

I love to read the reviews on TobaccoReviews.com. I've favorited about a dozen posters (including JimInks and Pipestud). My tastes don't align with anyone 100%, but I can get a pretty good idea if it's something I'll like by reading my favorite reviewers.
I'll add that I never taste the "cocoa, chocolate, earth, wood and anise" descriptors that appear in many reviews. I believe they taste those notes, but I don't and it always makes me chuckle.

It's like expecting everyone to like what you like, aint gona happen. If you like something you'll give it a good review so naturally it'll sound appealing and if ya don't, just the opposite. There was a time I liked Tuna fish and jelly sandwiches and if I had the vocabulary I'm sure I could make it sound good to many. That's doesn't mean they'll like it after trying it. A bit extreme of a comparison but, I think you get the picture.

A bit extreme of a comparison but, I think you get the picture. Actually, you are right and in the opposite way, too. Often people who don't like aros will finish a review with, "It's really good for an aro," and then give it one star. Or they state they dislike aros and then write a paragraph to prove it. It's just not always that way. Even though I disagree with much of what you say, I don't care for movie reviews. It's the same thing, but the inconsistency is mine Edit - One thing about good and bad tobaccos I had been thinking of lately, so your post reminded me to bring it up. To me, there are very few "bad" tobaccos. Something bad to me is a tobacco that should not exist. Most do for a reason. Sutliff Frosty Mint has no excuse for existence. I enjoy all types of tobacco now, so it's not trying to make one try something. It's simply a shared experience like discussing your favorite Saint Louis Cardinal.

I think I saw that people mentioned 3 or 4 reviewers. Are these the only ones that merit reading or do they just review a lot of tobaccos?

I can't tell you whether they are worth reading or not, as that would be a review you don't want to read. I can tell you there are many reviewers on TR. I don't review there as I don't consider my opinion or expertise good enough. I post reviews here among friends... it's more sharing than review. Now, I have a couple questions: Did you already know the answer before you asked? If so, why ask?

for me, most reviews are a starting point of reference for me, mostly to get an average of likes/dislikes. Having smoked the number of blends in 50+ years of smoking I tend to take more stock in the variety of leaf found in the blend to give me an idea if I want to try it. I mostly read them to see how much folks can abuse the English language as well as to see which reviewer would be good at writing sales copy for the blend !

Gibby (He let's me call him that) is one of my heroes. Still, my all time fave is Red Schoendienst. This is the first time in decades that a manager has been fired and Red not here to take over the helm. PS - I am kidding about calling him Gibby. It's Mr. Gibson, like everybody else calls him

I donβt put a lot of stock in personal opinions expressed in reviews; every review that states a blend βwill never biteβ ends up having a contrasting review that describes the blend as βbiteyβ. I guess if you think of it as a meta-analysis, reviews are useful (e.g. most reviewers agree on a blendβs characteristics).
There are reviewers I enjoy reading, but that doesnβt mean we have similar tastes.
There are reviewers I agree with, but they may not be the best writers.
There are reviewers who are very entertaining but not very descriptive.
There are reviewers who are detailed and objective, but boring.
Different strokes for different folks!

I don't find very many of the reviews to be too flowery. It is nothing like reading the pretentious clap trap at the Beer Advocate or most any wine review..
As to the flavors, some I taste, some I do not. Many times it depends on how hard I am trying to taste things. Most of the time I am just smoking and don't think much about it.
I notice things, though. For instance, I bought a 12oz can of Half and Half to have something on hand that I could pack a quick pipe for when I take the dog out, etc; a mindless OTC just to have around for when I don't really want to think too much. It has a very distinct smell when I open the can. I knew the smell and knew it was a spice of some sort but I couldn't place it. It bothered me enough that I went to my spice cabinet and started smelling spices until I found it. It's coriander. Coriander? WTF? But it is. (I should have bought the Carter Hall or Prince Albert, BTW, but that is a story for another thread...) I can taste it too. If I were to write a review, I would say that it has a coriander taste that tends to overpower the Burleys and Virginias. Not to be pretentious, but to describe what I taste when I smoke it. I think the better reviews do a good job of telling what the reviewer tastes without getting off the wall and overly descriptive. I like that.

I can't understand why they would put that in tobacco, but you're right. See, I wouldn't have found this out but for your comments

π³π³π³π³I buy everything JimInks tells me to. π³π³lπ³π³ I wonder if he has a bridge for sale! I call foul - not fair and uncalled for! What's really going on here???! Fess up!!! Creating a thread to vent a personal animosity veiled under guise of general discussion of interest is a ploy not welcomed by this forum member! The intimating pokes and innuendo are obvious. Animosity phrased in civil tone is still animosity.

Unless you see something I totally missed, maybe from another thread???

I certainly intended no offense and am unaware of what is being referenced. Sorry if I somehow pushed a button. My post was a joke aimed at Jim. I know he enjoyed it.

Wait a minute. JimInks sells bridges? My well-experienced longstanding understanding is that JimInks "Builds Bridges" and then gives them away toll free.

They've pointed me to some nice smokes; however, my cellar is set now. All of my smoke is aged or aging more and I don't have much use for them anymore. Sharing tobacco and knowledge with others is the game these days.

Baboo called it right. It was obvious in first post. Then innocently asking if said reviewers are the only ones that merit reading. That was another intended poke not in a fraternal spirit
