My personal feelings on the subject is what my mother always use to say when someone would complain about something she did in the privacy of her own home, "If ya don't like the heat, get out of the kitchen!" That's all I got to say on the matter.

You know my Mom would say that often. But of course, I was her biggest fan,so I stuck around.I just wish she would have taught me how to make her Divinity.I've had others, but Mom's would just melt away leaving Heavenly sweet taste.Never cloying, but always enticing. Why can't I stay on topic?

My wife makes a Spaghetti sauce that I can hurt myself with everytime. No recipe just starts with onions and adds things till it tastes right. Those nights we never have left overs.

I’d simply tell them, My house. My rules. I don’t even ask to smoke or think I should smoke in someone else’s house if they’re nonsmokers. But when I’m home, company just has to deal with it.
I suppose I’m bullheaded like Archie Bunker. Until all us old timers fade into the sunset, they will just have to stay in their safe space.

Coming from a military family, I knew my place in such a situation.... I had the rank of scrub in such a setting.
It was my job to bring beers to the adults, empty ashtrays if called upon to, etc...I inherently knew that if I were to say something that my dad perceived to bring discomfort to a host, I would be dealt with. I am glad that I had that upbringing.
When we raised our kids, we often received compliments from others on how well our kids behaved in restaurants and other places in public. Even though my son decided early in life that his role was that of black sheep, he knew that some lines never get crossed, we made it abundantly clear at an early age. And FWIW, he routinely did receive corporal punishment at home for misbehavior, it was never administered out of anger or resulted in beatings, it was out of a desire to teach accountability for one’s misdeeds... he thanks me for it now.

This ^ We get compliments on behavior too, which sometimes I'm surprised by. I can't say we administer "corporal punishment, per se, but there are definite consequences for misbehavior. And, I can't say it's not 100% out of anger, but we (I) are still pretty new to this, and it's all learning along the way. Don't know how long I'll be waiting for a thank you for it though. Haha.

I suppose a big part of this is that the grandchild hadn't been taught respect. Regardless of the other issues discussed, children need to be taught the value and necessity of respect. It costs nothing but is priceless.

+1 ^^^^^^^^^^^ don’t blame the children when they’re not taught how too also properly respect others! I agree. Parenting: do it. My nieces and nephews have been brought up to talk to everyone the same way. They always comment on me smoking my pipe or vaping. "Eeew! YOU'RE SMOKING!!! EEEEW!". I always come back with a "yeah? So what?". They never know how to respond. What's worse is I'm usually vaping White Coconut Cake, which I make myself, and it smells heavenly. Same for my usual company friendly aromatics. Conditioned that anything that LOOKS like smoke, or is tobacco related is instant death. I get it, smoking anything can be detrimental to your health. It's better you teach your kids not to smoke until they're old enough to make that decision. But, teach them not to admonish an adult for making an adult decision.

My daughters never needed to be spanked, a stern talking to and loss of privileges got them quickly on track. My son was an extremely hard case up until pre-teen, still a problem then but was able to deal with consequences.
He never like to be told what to do, so he joined the Marine Corps... it turned out to be a great finishing school.

My son at 17 was working with me doing termite treatments. We would stop at a convenience to grab a gatorade at lunch.Well one fine hot summer day, we ran into his HS principal. My son being a goof, walks up "Hi Chris".After he pick his butt up off the ground,he politely said "Hello Mr ******".I didn't hit him,I snatched his shoulder in a Vulcan Pinch. But he learned,Respect ALWAYS comes first.
