Lady M. Having had unsuccessful back surgery (but they did kill the sciatic nerve pain) PLEASE don't let a Chiropractor near him. Any slight movement that is incorrect could leave him paralyzed...I know from experience and had to convince the HMO that seeing a chiropractor was out of the equation. Now on serious opioids for the rest of my life. Still have daily pain but with the narcotics I can live with the pain. Opioids are no fun, but usually the only thing that works. Pain level for his pain is most likely 8-10...and he must let them know that. I tell all folks that I know that are on opioids that they should consider not driving unless absolutely necessary...DUI is not DUI except for Dr. approval. Having a serious car crash will result in a blood draw and if you have a level of opioids in your system, you are guilty and inviting a lawsuit. Just my .02. thanks for the info!

I had L4/5 back surgery and today I'm pain free and drug free but my Dr. was a neurosurgeon and not an orthopedic surgeon. If I could use the same Doc I wouldn't hesitate to do it again.

"but my Dr. was a neurosurgeon and not an orthopedic surgeon"
Damn...never thought of that. I guess it depends on what is happening to your back. I needed a orthopedic man cause he had to break bone spurs off of my back. But I don't think I had any nerve damage so, on reflection I guess I needed what I got. However someone contemplating back surgery needs to know all the options of how to approach your back.

Exercise will help tons and swimming is probabally the best because it is so low impact, dare I say no impact. Seriously anything you can do to strengthen the core helps. Keeping a rolled up towel in the car to put behind you in the lumbar region when you drive will give tremendous relief. Combine all of these suggestion and change our pear shaped bodies will bring great relief in most cases.

I won't say I have pain free completely but hell I'm 52 soon to be 53 and every once in a great while I creak and pop but it beats the hell outta pissing and moaning about it

don't know what options he will have. we were told he's having a consult with an orthopedist Aug. 27, and we don't know what that is about, but the letter we got has him going to the surgery center, so I guess the doctor is going to discuss surgery options with him.
