I've had my eye out for an estate Oom Paul for sometime. I just got this Edward's Oom Paul on eBay. It's my first full bent pipe as well. i bought one those back in '74 as I remember and had smoked it only once when a friend offered his Tanshell Edwards Bulldog for trade ! I still have it ( it's not tan anymore !) and he still smokes his !

What is the highest numerical grade of Edwards algerian briar? They all have a certain aged briar look but the flame in the grain is still shocking and a bit much to absorb. Briar sensory overload to me. Not sure on the new ones but the old have and almost artistic briar look with layered grain.

Point being they must have had access to a unique lot of briar, algerian is nice. But I've noticed some of Edwards pipes are of the finer briar.

Can’t wait to go to Edwards I will be checking them out hopefully tomorrow or Thursday.. Todays Edward's are not made from the same oil cured Algerian briar as the older ones were. You need to look at estates from the late '80s back.

Edwards seem to be the best in my I opinion, but its had plenty of smokes and seems just fine after 40 years but its got some lineage as well, no coloring but on the rim.

Smoking 6/9 bowls a day mine got smoked almost every day. The more ya smoke 'em the darker they get, especially those bought in the early '70s. My oldest, a 720-L bent bulldog , that I bought in '71 you cant even see the grain very well it's so dark.

Here's a grain pic, with stamping, anybody have any used what the their grading system is imgur.com/gallery/r2biPDdI figured plenty of people have an edwards to base some sort of grading in the here and now, if nothing else off smokability.

Anyone who knows an thing about Edwards please post what the number on the bottom means. Most likely a shape number, they also had symbols like a "key", "mushroom", etc. Here's a price list from 1999 that names some of the symbols used.

I have a 700-L billiard and a 730-S Coachman stamped France with a 7 on the shank. Not sure what that means exactly. (Both courtesy of AJ)

(Both courtesy of AJ) Mine is a coachman 730-s 5 stamped, which I was told not but near an hour ago that it was a Benton which sold for 70 dollars back then, call Edwards tomorrow for the scoop on your 730-s.

I've never seen an Edwards with a military mount. Now I have to go add another saved search on the Bay...

If you find one reasonably priced buy it. Use to have more than 24 from the 60s and 70s. The few Edwards I have recently acquired to replace my lost collection, are the best pipes I have.

Look for the older Edwards (50s & 60s). Another thing to consider the briar is oil cured. I have about 20 of them and they are for the most part inexpensive. You have gone to heaven my friend to have that many Edwards! I’ve secured 4 to replace so,e of mine lost by movers. Still looking for that square rhodesian. I think it was a 730 or 703.
