Yes,cork knockers are a mandatory purchase for new pipe smokers. If for no other reason than to complain that the stupid thing wont stay in place. Handy item to throw at at scowlers also.

Mark ^^^^^^^^^^^ next time you open a bottle of wine save the cork. Cut it down to size you like and you can even carve a shape and round the top as you like👍 Any 2 stage epoxy will hold it tight in any ashtray......have fun👍 That's a great idea Ted and thank you! It just so happens that my next door neighbors are very into wine. Their blue recycle box shows a number of empty Cabernet Sauvignon bottles, and I will most likely "mossy-on" over next door to rescue those corks before Friday's pick-up. Cool stuff  Champaign corks are perfect and show all of your high class tastes.

I lightly use a knocker almost every bowl and always have a rotation of large clubby looking ashtrays with knockers at hand including a Mumm's with the top half of a Mumm's cork knocker.

The adhesive that comes on the bottom of a cork knocker is very low adhesion, so I put some G.E. Silicone- Clear to affix it to the ashtray.

Hmmmmm...... I picked up a dozen cork knockers with the double sided tape pad on the bottom of them from ebay last year. Think they were $10 shipped. Put a couple of them into various surplus cigar ashtrays I had laying around the mancave. One of them is a large plastic ashtray, the others are ceramic. I also received a pipe ashtray with pipe rests molded into it (ceramic) and a cork knocker in the center. I use em all the time, taking care to hold the pipe stummel in my hand with my forefinger on the heal of the bowl, thus preventing cracking the shank or the stem. When I'm out in the wild (golf course) I use my hand or the side of the golf cart tire. If after a couple of taps the dottle remains I will get the pipe tool out and remove it. In the end I guess it's a "To each their own" sorta thing....

I mostly smoke outdoors, so using a cork knocker doesn't really come into play. I mostly just tap out the burnt tobacco into my hand and toss it. I suppose I could carry around a cork knocker and adhere it to something, like a parked car or a tree. Probably better than banging my pipe against a brick wall or a metal railing.

do meershaum pipes get damaged if you touch the stone portion? thx Depends on who you ask. Some say that handling a meer prior to smoking it for a dozen or so times so that the wax melts in will result in uneven coloration. Others say that's an old wives' tale.

Wine corks, set on their side in the ashtray. Give you a place to do a light tap if you need it. Works perfect, and don't have to buy a special knocker. Though the amount spent on wine could become an issue.

I use a knocker when sitting on my front porch enjoying a pipe. I can tap the pipe easily into the ash tray without damaging the pipe or having to mess with the pipe tool.

I find that I haven't a need for a knocker but, I smoke outside. I use my tamp with the scoop end to dislodge the spent tobacco into my cuspidor and then again to make sure all comes out and tap the bowl against the outer edge of my palm to get the rest out or my heel if I'm smoking a cob. This usually dislodges a little ash which I just let fall to the ground. I wouldn't want to do this in a home or establishment so a cork knocker would certainly be handy in that case.

I wouldn't ever buy one simply because I make my own ashtrays for leaving around the house with an empty tin, and a cork from a wine bottle cut down so the lid will go on and some gorilla glue to hold it in place. Thus, I can keep my "ashtrays" covered when not in use and they are easily transportable. But that's just my take. Do whatever you like and are comfortable with. Great idea, come to think if it I have a Champagne cork with a smiley face on it some where And I have crap loads of F-26 in the shop.

Great idea^^^^^^^^ Brad....the clothespin idea works well👍👍 As for me when I was younger I found myself using the knockers method often. Now that I’m older, not so much!!

You could put a pair of knockers in an ashtray and I still wouldn’t use them Image, go away.
