Roger Moore as 007 is smooth.
Charles Bronson as Paul Kersey is rusticated
They are both pretty badass...so is the case with briar.

I like them both. It gives me the opportunity to get multiples of the same shape. So for example I love the Sav 320 EX, and have one smooth and one rusticated. That means I can enjoy that shape more than once a day without smoking a particular pipe more than once a day.

...always drawn more toward sandblasts, but other types of "rustication" are hit-and-miss for me. If a briar has outstanding grain, smooth is called for... That sums it up for me too!

If all other things are equal it comes down to two basic questions: How nice is the grain? How good is the rustication (or sandblast)?

I like a nicely grained smooth briar most of all. But, I also love a gnarly sandblast like the old Dunhills. There are some rusticated/blast combinations that I love - like the expensive Savinelli Corallo pipes.

I don't like heavy rustication, but I definitely like the sandblasted look in bonanzadriver 's bent bulldog there.

Honestly I can't keep myself or my head right most of the time and I drop stuff everywhere. So I would say I like them rusticated more. When I first started I swore by smooth pipes. But they show damage way too easily in my opinion. I have some that I love dearly but I never take them outdoors for that very simple reason.

I like them all. Smooth, rusticated, sandblasted, carved. It depends on the pipe and how I feel about it at the time of purchase.

Depending on the shape and style of the pipe.....both smooth or rusticated works fine for me👍

I have an equal number of both. Both smooth and rustic or blasted if applied with taste and a sense of beauty will be stunning. Each pipe offers its own beauty. It's simply how the pipe speaks to you. All surfaces speak to me. MY interpretation is, of course, assisted by a bit of whisky.

I haven't smoked a pipe I haven't liked yet as far as finish goes. I have a couple with a demon in them that I have a couple more things to try but it could be smooth rusticated or blasted. If it smokes well is all that matters to me.

I have a good combination of both, as long as they all smoke well they’re keepers for me👌👍 i feel the same but , do slightly prefer blasted / rustication - for the cooler handling .
