After a week I figured enough time had gone by and the suspense was killing me It turned out nice and firm and smelled wonderful. The kake was easy to fluff back up and smelled even better after fluffing. I did the three step method to load my Country Gentleman and was off to the races. The tobacco lit right up when charring the first time. A light tamp was needed and the first official light was easy, it fired right up with very minimal flame. the tobacco tasted very mellow and produced a thick cool smoke which I like. The bowl of the CG stayed very cool and I only had to relight once and that was because I got to running my mouth and neglected the pipe. All in all I would have to call this a success for my first time.

Nice job. I plan on taking my 2nd one out tomorrow. I dont remember what I put in it, but I'm sure it's going to be bad and get thrown away. But hey, it was worth a shot. It has some tobacco that really had NO flavor at all, mixed with some "decent" tobacco, mixed with some cherry tobacco.
My expectations are very low. Low expectations = no disappointment.

It depends on the initial taste of it. I was going to dump them to begin with, so I'm not really losing anything. If its horrid, it's getting dumped, if it still taste like nothing, it's getting dumped. I have enough good tobacco to play around with after I get this one out.

Well, I been researching and I think I have enough information to proceed. I’m gonna press some pipe Tobacco! We went to dinner and I had the Porterhouse and an disgustingly loaded baked potato and we split the “Peaches n Cream” for desert, man I tell ya now that was worth spiking my blood sugar. After dinner I forced at spoon point, my darling Wife to run around and gather the materials needed to build the press. On to the pressin All you need is as follows. 1. Some 3” ID PVC……….. $7 and change at Lowes. (I purchased a 3’ chunk) 2. 2 hockey pucks…………. $1.89 each at Academy Sports 3. 1-8” C-clamp…………… $7.99 at Harbor Freight Total cost is about $21.00 tax included. I have no idea as to why I’m telling Y’all about this, every one of you have seen the YouTube video. I cut the PVC into 8” pieces and washed the PVC throughly with hot, hot soapy water The pucks got the same treatment. I’m figgerin the clamp don’t really need much prep work as it won’t touch any tobacco, but will probably wipe the clamp and other components down with some 194 proof liquor (that gets delivered in a mason jar) before I actually start pressin. Hear’s the thing! Almost every thing I have read about pressin says it’s best to do this over a two week time period using 1/2 turns of pressure every day after the initial press. Here’s the part thats killin me! If I start to press tonight I’ll be leaving for California nine days into the process, which is Tuesday August 14th. And will not return until the August 28th. Sooooooo, do I start the process tonight and follow the procedure up until the 14th and let it sit for 2 weeks without any attention or do I take it with me so I can continue with the 1/2 turns as per the correct procedure Or do I wait until I get home on the 28th and start it on the 29th? What would Y’all do? I'll tell you straight, Pistol Pete 1911. Nothing is worth spiking your blood sugar. I have type one Diabetes and have had friends have toes amputated and kidneys replaced. Watch your sugar, brother. I mean this in a meaningful, friendly way. I want you to be healthy; That is my motive. A short spike may be ok, but don't keep it there. I hope you receive this in a positive way.

The Doc that diagnosed me said he would be cutting parts off of me in 6mo. (I was 315 with an A1C of over 13) I told him to go fornicate himself and righted my situation post haste. You are very correct it don't pay to screw with your health.

I would get a few hockey pucks and dbl stack so I didn't have to work the clamp so hard and it won't wanna go wonky on you, you want the clamp to stay straight as possible

Jack, looks like your cake turned out perfect, hope it smokes well for you👍👍 In all honesty I didn't know what to expect but it really did turn out good. It's 1Q and it don't have any tingling on the tongue it's very flavorful but mellow if that makes sense and smokes very cool, I'm happy.

So, is the consensus that pressing does indeed smooth and mellow a blend?

So, is the consensus that pressing does indeed smooth and mellow a blend? Yes by all means or it did this time. I think with pressure applied you're forcing time.

It's incredibly sticky. It's going in the trash when I get home. Not a loss, it was made from some tobaccos that I really did care for (bland or too heavily cased).

I would not be pressing to make poor or mediocre tobacco blends better. Rather, I will be selecting from my very best tobaccos (aged), pressing to improve them even more... or at very least convert them to a cake or plug form which would tend to meld their flavors and perhaps smooth them out even further. Thankfully I have enough to play with.

That is my plan. This was just something thrown together while I didn't have anything else in there. I figured if it didnt turn out good, I lost nothing.
I had no expectations of turning tobacco I didnt like into something good. Cant make chicken salad from chicken poop
