As by this small sample of my collection, about less than a third of all my pipes are smooth. I love a good sandblast.

I like both, but I prefer blasted. The craggier, the better!

Have smooth and blasted pipes, and really like both of them. I don't really have a preference for either, depends on the pipe itself. I do have a fondness for older pipes, especially old Kaywoodies. Other than that, my preference is for natural or unfinished pipes.

...the thing is, a smooth pipe has to be a better grade of briar, and a sandblast "eliminates" flaws. It has little or nothing to do with the way the pipes smoke, but it has everything to do with the appearance, so you have a pipe by "X" maker that cost you $1200.00, then there's another that burns your tobacco just as well for $100.00.
Am I wrong? I think not.
