A few years back, I had heard that Sutliff was interested in donating tobacco's to pipe clubs for a nominal shipping fee so as to provide samples for members try out and offer up reviews and critique....I sent an email, and got a response that they had suspended it and would get back to me if they were going to start it back up....I had heard that some loosely organized pipe clubs had shenanigans going on, and in one instance, the guy that set it up turned into Gollum, and the tobacco's that came in were his "precious". That was hearsay, but I read it on the net so it must have been true.
Several months back, one of our club members took the initiative and contacted Mac Baren and gave them my email address, and a nice lady contacted me and asked me about our pipe club...I sent a link to our website and Facebook page and it has been I took no offence, as it is up to them if they want to go forward with it, and we certainly weren't looking for a subsidy. Heck...at our monthly meetings, it is a gorge-a-rama of fine tobacco's, and everyone is very generous in offering leaf to others.
A letter came today, that asked if we would like to participate, an excerpt:
I cannot help but think that our online presence has played a role...with a website and Facebook page up for a few years, as time goes by we are getting more and more hits and inquiries from pipe smokers nearby...but from the perspective of a tobacco wholesaler, I think that it helps vet a legitimate pipe club that has regular meetings instead of stocking a Gollum like pipe smoker.
