Good day everyone. 46 year old municipal employee here. I'll see if I can make a long story short. I smoked cigarettes for 20+ years and gave them up for a couple. It was a rough battle and with my wife and co workers smoking around me I never lost the urge. I took up cigars this spring and fell in love. Problem is I like smoking them and they ain't cheap lol. I've been considering trying a pipe but haven't taken the plunge yet. I've been lurking around here and a couple other forums (I chose to join this one:)) gathering information and much like cigars...its so damn confusing. I usually jump in feet first so this should be exciting. Thanks for welcoming me and I look forward to many conversations.

Dennis, I think you will find pipe smoking more enjoyable.
Take is slow. There is lot to this in order to get it right but worth the effort and patience.
You may find that it is not necessary to inhale to enjoy smoking.
Perhaps you have a local pipe shop you can visit and help you find a pipe to start with.
Look the pipes over and find one that appeals to you. Now, your choice will be based upon limited knowlege and that is fine. Just one you like. Later, with more experience, you can add new ones.
Select a mild but good quality tobacco mixture. I suggest avoiding "aromatics". That shop owner can advise you. If there are bulk tobaccos in the shop, stick your nose down in there and select one that smells interesting to you. If no bulk tobacco in bins, I suggest MacBaren's, any of them, as they are mild but good quality. Others here might have additional suggestions.
You are about to embark upon a journey which reaches from.... well, you know.

Thank you toshtego. Unfortunately I have no shops near me other than gas stations and drug stores. Perhaps this is a huge part of my confusion and inability to make a decision. I have decided to go with an inexpensive cob pipe for now, and I shall check out MacBaren's.

My straight forward advice: buy a book of matches, a corncob pipe, and a pouch of Carter Hall pipe tobacco from a drug store. Pack lightly, use an inkpen to tamp it down, and just use your pinky and a toothpick to clean out your pipe when you are done. This is what I did when I first started.
See what you think.
VERY tiny investment. If it seems kinda your thing, then you can get more fancy and get a Dr. Grabow pipe from the same drug store and maybe order yourself a tin of Billy Budd (which has cigar leaf in it!!!!!!) from smokingpipes or head to your local tobaccanist and see what pipe tobaccos they'd recommend to a newbie advancing from the drug store varieties.
Welcome! Enjoy!

adding my welcome & greets from 50miles East of Buffalo, NY. Echo that this the best forum now. Two "giants" of the hobby from Vermont. The late Barry Levin & still around, pipemaker JT Cooke.
Ed Duncan, Batavia, NY 77 & still upright & probably still gots my "seniority" here! pipe/cigar since '62

Welcome from Maryland! Glad to hear you got a cob. They smoke anything very well. I'd dive in and try a bunch of stuff. I second everyone else's advice, since you're coming from cigars. Carter Hall, Billy Budd, even Lane Adullo - which is fermented cigar leaf. But, I'd give aromatics a chance too. There are some really good ones, and some good crossover Aromatic English blends. That's the wonderful thing about pipes; there's just miriad blends and pipes to try. No two exactly alike - and, even the same tobacco tastes and smokes differently in different pipes.

XJ:
My friendly advice....get yourself a nice estate pipe, some nice tobacco, and learn how to smoke a pipe. There's nothing like it. It will take some practice, but once you get the hang of it, you'll sit back and savor those moments of blissful solitude and serenity. Cigarettes literally stink, and kill....cheroots cost a fortune....ahhhh, but a pipe and tobacco costs very little and the pipe will last until YOU return to ashes. Seriously, you'll never know how great a pipe is to smoke until you try it. You will have an infinite selection of tobaccos, blends, mixtures, and pipes to choose from. Don't complicate your life. Choose something to smoke, and do it. Refurbished estate pipes can cost under 50 bucks, and some nice tobacco is really cheap too. Check out some pipe-sellers, eBay, etc. for estate pipes, and do a search for tobacco sellers. Marry the two, and you're off and running. But really endeavor to learn the correct way to smoke a pipe. I also urge you to watch all the many great videos on pipe-smoking, selection of tobaccos, and pipe and tobacco reviews on You-Tube. The information that's out there is fantastic, and very helpful. None of this access to information even existed when I started to smoke a pipe back in 1966. I learned more about pipe-smoking and tobaccos from these You-Tube videos in one year than I learned through all these years that are now behind me. Get smart right from the beginning, and avoid the grief. So.....join the coterie of men, and women, that have learned how to relax from Life's vexations. Learn how to kick back, and disappear in a cloud of self-generated, aromatic smoke. Check out from harsh reality. Create your own "safe space" where wives can't nag, and kids can't scream. Turn on, tune in, and drop out. Go off by yourself, seek solitude, be peaceful, and catch the threads of vanishing dreams.
BTW....Welcome to the forum.
