I don't work Fridays during the summer months so I made a trip to town to see what I could come up with for pipe smoking supplies. It took four drug stores to come up with this meager little starter kit. Honestly I am not pleased with anything other than the Missouri Meerschaum cob pipe, which was double the price it should have been. At least now I can give it a go and find out if I can ease up on the expensive cigars. Now I have something to start with, I will begin buying from the net as there is a much greater selection. Any suggestions of good sites to deal with as I have already noticed a dislike for Pipes and Cigars floating around here. Now I have already watched a video on the Frank method of packing a bowl and I am going to head out on the porch and give it a go. I will start with Captain Black and report back here with my experience.

I wouldn't base the experience on that sampling. There's a lot to digest. With you being a cigar smoker and myself not, I'm a little hesitant but would guess Watch City Slice would be right up your alley. They have several good ones which might work for you.
I'm also guessing you will appreciate Latakia; however, others' recommendations here will be better than my own.

I seem to do better with Pipes & Cigars on smaller orders but unless they have something you like that only they carry, go with Smoking Pipes. The packing is way better for shipping. Good luck and take your time.

Ok, I packed the bowl using the Frank method, learned after I lit that the draw was very free and perhaps my "pinch" or "plug" was not large enough. Not a big deal, I can easily change that next time. As I said the draw was quite free, but I did enjoy the smoke. The captain black was very mild for the first half of the bowl, but after I dumped the ash, stirred and re-lit it was quite harsh, probably something I could have done differently. Here's the bowl after packed... After i stirred the tobacco halfway through, I noticed a bunch of ash in the stem, I assume this is normal. And...since I'm new here I'll throw ya a pic of my ugly mug with my new cob...

Warm welcome from the San Francisco Bay, Denis! What you describe is indeed normal. Keep at it!

Prince Albert is a great blend! I didnt care for the other two. I never stir the baccy myself. I do dump though. I don't want any left over ash mixing in with the good stuff. Patience is key.

Thats actually the perfect starter kit for a brand new pipe smoker, in my opinion.
Prince Albert is a GREAT counter/codger blend. I enjoy it very regularly and I've been smoking pipes for over 15 years.

Glad your smoking the Captain Black Original...that was my first pipe tobacco I enjoyed many moons ago. The Cherry blend back then was better, so don’t be disappointed if you get a chemical taste. I was never a cigarette smoker, therefore I never enjoyed smoking Prince Albert. I’ve noticed many ex cigarette smokers enjoy Prince Albert...good luck...hope it’s a pleasant blend for you.
Get your hands on Sir Walter Raleigh Aromatic....it’s an over the counter tobacco ( OTC ) that should not be difficult for you to locate. Smokingpipes has the pouches for $5.10👌👍👍
Enjoy your new hobby!!!

Having been a cig smoker for many years (un-filtered Pall Malls) I have to say I never could smoke Prince Albert in a pipe. The e-tailer I've dealt with for years has been Smoking Pipes.com www.smokingpipes.com . Wide choice of pipes and tobacco's and some of the BEST customer service in the industry ! Be patient, don't rush and I think you will find enjoyment and pleasure in smoking a pipe.

It is a shame you had to over pay for that cob but be glad it wasn't a cob made in China. Also sorry you could only find one decent tobacco, Prince Albert is a mild to medium smoke, in most cases you can open the pouch and load bowl then smoke. When you can try SWR with the black label it is also non-aromatic, then there is Carter Hall, Granger. Sorry I'm in the camp that a new piper shouldn't start with aromatics.
If these don't treat the desire for your nic fix add a bit of one of your cigars to one. There are blends that has cigar leaf in them.

I've got the solution to that one ... learn to roll your own! It's easier than you'd think and a $10-12 tasting cigar can be rolled for around $2 a stick. Also ... nice XJ. Is that a '99?

If you've been a cigar smoker, try some English/Balkan blends. 2 oz bulk buys will be pretty cheap, so you can try a bunch.

It's fairly heavy, and quite complex. Good amount of nicotine too. Bayou Night is a good one too. Those are tin-only though.

You've got a mm cob. That's a great start. I also don't think you did too bad for your first bowl. Sometimes I get and ash on the stem of the pipe but a filter tends to catch most of it. Condensation catches the rest.

I came to pipe smoking as a long time cigar smoker. When starting out, I was warned that I should give it some time. That was good advice. It takes awhile to get the hang of it.- - A pipe won’t necessarily produce the kind of huge clouds that you may be used to with a cigar. It’s usually best to sip a pipe. That will prevent you from smoking too fast & vigorously - which can get the tobacco too hot to fully taste.
I enjoy cigars and pipes, put if I were limited to just one - - it would definitely be the pipe. There is such a variety of flavors available in pipe tobacco. I find the whole pipe smoking process very relaxing. And there’s the added bonus that pipes can be smoked for a fraction of the cost of cigars. Enjoy !
