If you need, or want, a spare stem I have one. It's from a Ben Wade Matt Original that ended up having a cleverly disguised burn out in the side.

After two days, the pipes are ready for the buffer. I'm going to get the stems done first. I went with something different on the Royal Grain and added a coat of Howard Butcher Block Conditioner (mineral oil, beeswax and caranuba).I really like the way it turned out and may wipe the Martinique down with it also.

Joe, great job on both restorations, the pipes look new. The color and style stem are a perfect fit, I’m amazed how stunning each piece of briar turned out. Hope you enjoy for many years 👌👍👍

Thanks for posting your blog links....I’m going to take a look.
Do you ever sell any pipes?? Like an Oom Paul. I only have two freehand pipes, more then enough. I’m not a freehand pipe smoker, they look great on others👍👍

Wow! Those are stunning, Joe. They look like they've never been smoked. Personally, freehands are my favorites. I love classic shapes as well, but nothing takes my breath away like a freehand and there is something very special about Preben Holms/Ben Wades. Definitely not just a big hunk of wood.

Very nice... What machine do you use for buffing your pipes?

Very nice... What machine do you use for buffing your pipes? I bought a cheap buffer at Harbor Freight and a speed controller to plug it into. I use six inch buffer pads. Mostly I use carnuba wax. Awhile back I learned the trick to getting the high gloss shine when doing a restoration is to remove the old finish and grime with alcohol, either by soaking or using cotton pads and then spend a lot of time sanding. I've been told I'm spending too much time on it but I always work my way up from either 320 or 600 grit sandpaper (depending on how bad the pipe is) to 12,000 micro-mesh pads (1,000, 2000, 4000, 8000 before the 12000). It's amazing the glossy shine I get before I put the first wax on the pipe. I forgot to type it in. I alternate between dry sanding and wet sanding also.

Nice work on these! Joe's right...the more "prep" work you do on your pipe restorations, the less actual buffing you'll ever need to do. In fact, depending too much on buffing (in place of properly working your way up to it) will do a better job of showing your lack of prep than actually making the pipe look good. Well done, Joe.

I have a bought a couple of bundles of assortment stems from eBay for this kind of thing. I can usually find a close fit. One I did was a GBD Perspex stem on a Butz Choquin Calabash. It was a straight stem and because of the shape I had to bend it so that the GBD logo is now on the right side, but it's a perfect fit and made a perfect pipe. You do great work.
