One day nicotine is bad for you, the next day it’s good. Same has been said about chocolate, eggs, coffee and so on.

Some would say its a certain blend and pipe that's allowed them to live so long, be it stress buildup relief of smoking a pipe or the cadence of it all adding up to somewhat of a disipline, or a short reprieve. Jmho, and plenty of old codgers alike.

Thats not bad at all in my opinion.

I don't think the big problem with smoking has ever been nicotine. I've always understood it to be the tar and chemicals in the smoke to be the real danger.

Nicotine is just a mild stimulant in the doses we get from pipe/cigar tobacco, or Vapes. Not much different than coffee. You don't see public outcry about all that nasty addictive caffeine in the coffee we drink all day.

Which isn't altogether harmful until your delivery system involves inhaling smoke.. He writes as he finishes smoking a cigarette 🤔

PBusardo (for those of you who don't know is a vapor/ecig advocate) said something along the lines that if nicotine were put into a drink and combined with rituals like coffee some time ago, society wouldn’t be all about how bad it is and that it’s the delivery system that is really the issue.
Sadly, nicotine is only seen as a drug that comes with smoking and smoking is bad. Coffee and crazy energy drinks though are needed because one is just not ready for the world without their caffeine fix.

That's why I wrote pipe/cigar tobacco and vapes - to the exclusion of cigarettes. Cigarettes are nasty things. When I quit 5 years ago, I had all sorts of crazy stuff going on - depression, panic attacks, etc. - even though I was vaping to get my nicotine. So, I don't believe that nicotine is the ONLY addictive thing in cigarettes. There have been studies that found MAOIs in them. Here is one: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC19495/

To be perfectly honest, it's the part of me that's already addled by depression that wants to keep smoking.

Read the article and have this to say...quoting the article : rising popularity of electronic cigarettes - tobacco-free gadgets people use to inhale nicotine-laced vapor, which have helped some people quit smoking.
They are still inhaling a substance into their lungs..while not probably true for all, the few friends I know that have used vaping to quit smoking wound up having to go to the hospital for asthma like issues. They were gasping for breath. Not sure vaping is the answer.
I will say from personal experience that when I find it necessary to kick start the morphine I take for spinal stenosis, I will smoke a Marlboro...just one, and it does it. So for me, smoking a cig. some times is a benefit. Not be a research scientist, I can't for sure say that it is the nicotine that is doing it...could be the other crap they soak the paper in. I don't know. I understand the reason big tobacco is pushing vaping...it is cheaper by far to produce chemicals than tobacco...and we know they are not doing it to "help" folks out who are addicted to cigs.
Not sure my post is a help in this conversation, but being a member here I thought I'd throw my .02 into the conversation.

I don't inhale and I don't vape nicotine products. What's the point, you may ask? Well, since I can't detect nicotine in the first place I don't smoke for that reason. I like the experience; and with the weather in Ireland being so awful, this allows me to smoke indoors if I wish. That said, I rarely use it now, because one of the things I love about pipes smoking is the smell of the smoke. You don't get that with vape.

So can water.

Caffeine has an LD50 and one can buy it in various forms, including pure.
But nicotine is evil.

(If I can't smoke in here, I don't want you vaping in here, either.)

Many years ago, a Neurologist told me that nicotine is good for brain function. The problem being the delivery system will kill.
BTW, he was the first VA MD to break the Gulf War veterans poisoning problem. He had no problem bucking popular wisdom and beliefs.
