But there are things that are in order.
It's like having items that are in stock and out of stock.
I want to say there's a reason why the 'of' is dropped, but I can't.

The word “ of “ is the catch!! There is “ in order and out of the order “. ” In of order “ is not part of the English language.

I just noticed it when I saw an ATM that was "Out of Order", and realized that we don't do the same for "in".
Out of doors Out of line Out of stock Out of alignment Etc.
Harkens back to Gallagher's old skit about "Parking in the driveway" and "Driving on the Parkway".

Driveway and parkway both have totally reasonable etymologies though.
- The driveway is the short road connecting a garage/stable to the edge of the property.
- The original parkways were highways constructed through a spiderweb of parklands on Long Island. highway + park = parkway

See, Gallagher never gave context, and I never bothered to Google it. Now I feel like smashing a watermelon.

Vanderbilt Motor Parkway aka Long Island Motor Parkway was the first roadway on Long Island designed for automobiles only. Today it’s a major thoroughfare, definitely not a major parkway. Part of this roadway ran through Dix Hills where I lived for many years.

I also worked at 300 Motor Parkway in Hauppauge from 1993-2007.

I had told you #99 Mark Gastineau of the NY Jets lived off Village Hill Road, which is off Motor Pkwy aka Vanderbilt Motor Parkway. Hope your feeling much better, have a good nights sleep.
