Something that has bothered me for a while. I am looking back at reviews for some of my favorite blends and see quotes like "packing can't be easier just fold and stuff 2 flakes for a long slow smoke." I believe on a review for OGS someone mentions folding 3 flakes into their pipe.
Who has these pipes??? Who has time for a 2+ hour smoke?
I just did a test my largest pipe (a Bjarne I almost never smoke because it is too big) will hold exactly 1 HH Burley Flake. Most of my pipes are what I feel are normal size (3/4" x 1" inch deep or 19x25mm) hold about 3/4 of a flake cube cut or a little less rubbed out and packed loosely. That is still an hour + smoke for me.
Anyway just curious.

...I have several "Monster" pipes and actually smoke them fairly frequently... especially when writing late at night... there is something very satisfying about the feel of a BIG pipe in the hand...

I have a very few pipes that can hold 3/4 of the amount mentioned, and when I have had a long day of running my tookus off and dont want to go inside for a second bowl, I'll fold and stuff a bowl and pour a large stout adult beverage and relax for 2 or 3 hrs.

I've always wondered that too... Although I'm glad of a 45 minute smoke. 1 flake does me well.

Almost all of my pipes will hold two flakes and a few three. The typical bowl height is at least 2" and length 6" (although I prefer 6" to 7"). My shorter pipes are usually wide (at least 2"). I'm big and tall and have bought pipes to scale. I've only recently acquired a few pipes with smaller bowls and while they are great for Virginia blends, I feel kind of silly holding the little things. I generally like a large pipe that fits well in my big mitts. That said, I do not have or want any magnum size pipes.

I guess I like a long smoke. I don't think I've ever filled a pipe less than full and usually smoke down to the bottom, the only exception being some very wet smoking blends that won't burn near the bottom. That said, I'm sure it's healthier in several ways to smoke smaller amounts for shorter periods. Hope you're hunkered down for the storm, Ted. Take care. |

I have several large bowl pipes that will hold 2-3 flakes folded and stuffed providing a 2 hr. + smoke. My favorite is a Design Berlin Magnum Paneled Billiard. AJ  |

In most of my stacks I can get at least 3 flakes of HH latakia flake -- the big ones from the 1 lb bag.

The way I pack mine, I average 1 1/2 in most of my pipes. Although, after I fold and stuff, I trim the top off and save that for later. So they're really not full flakes. One day I want to get a big stack pipe that way it's "roll and stuff."

I like my pipes big and thick. My two most used fits 2 flakes normally. Dependant on the cut size more or less.

The closest I could get is my Savinelli 130ks. I havent tried a flake in it yet. It's a normal diameter bowl, but tall. Maybe I'll attempt it this weekend. Then again, I say that about my Michael Addis pipe that remains unsmoked.

I have one extra large pipe, a Hercules blasted st. bulldog which will hold 3 flakes worth of rubbed out 'baccy. Gives me a little over 2 hours of a smoke. The rest of my pipes hold btwn 1 and 1/12 flakes rubbed out. Works for me ! |

Not all flakes are the same same size. That said, I have 3 pipes that can hold at least 2 of any flake. The Radice GTWO is huge, and the Radice Wick is a little bigger. The Becker Morta bent brandy could certainly hold 3 flakes, as could the WDC Wellington Jumbo. Also as previously mentioned a lot of the Preben Holm pipes are huge. I have 3 of those.
