Of the petrified variety: Picked it up on my vacation. East of the Black Forest in a dry stream bed. The variety of colors surprised me at this location.

I’ve been fascinated with petrified wood since elementary school. All that I’ve seen is remarkably beautiful. Regrettably I’ve only seen pictures of it and sincerely wish I had a sample or two. Maybe one day at his will become a reality.

Those are the 'things' you picked up. I love the variety of colours.
I didn't know wood could get so frightened.
What do you do with them now (apart from counselling)?

I used to collect pieces of it when I was younger. When we moved from Michigan to Georgia it all got "lost." Beautiful pieces.

don, you got me a good one. I was looking at the pieces and was thinking there might be some good looking bowls and stuff there. Then I noticed the comment on the top of the pic.

Some I cut an end off of or cut a couple of facets in selected places. Then I polish the cut to a glass like sheen. Little pieces and scraps get polished in the rock tumbler. Most of those are given to neighborhood kids or family members and friends. Sometimes I will make a cabachon out of a piece and let my daughter have it for jewelry making. The majority I leave as found and display some and give away others. My favorites are in the man cave and are some of my favorite "things". I can tell you where each was collected and all are connected with fond memories of times spent with good friends and family. Some will be left to my kids one day and I hope will remind them of me and the fun we had together in the outdoors.

All of that sounds amazing, and such a wonderful way to leave a legacy to those who come after.

As I traveled the country, I collected unusual rocks, pieces of wood of which I've made some tampers...cut the pipe nails (aluminum ones) in half and drilled holes in either ends to make tampers with unusual holds. I have several...plan to give them to special friends. Doesn't cost much...just the price of the aluminum pipe nails.
