The nylon bristled brushes are the way to go on the airway, they do a great job at crud removal, don’t scratch like wire, and last quite awhile... cheap also.

I have more than one pipe. Heck I have more than several pipes. Though not as many as many of you.
So what I do is smoke a pipe once, put it the to-be-cleaned area. Then once a week or so I clean them, and put them in the "ready-to-smoke" area.

To me, a clean pipe is a good tasting pipe. I can notice that the taste of a pipe starts to be off after 7 or 8 bowls. When I finish a bowl, I leave a cleaner inserted to absorb moisture while the pipe cools down. After the pipe has cooled, I dump the ash, run a cleaner through it, bend the cleaner in half and give the bowl a wipe. I call that basic daily maintenance. After 5 or 6 bowls, I disassemble the pipe and do a thorough clean with Everclear (151 proof) and bristle cleaners plus check if any cake maintenance is needed. However, I don't use bristle cleaners on the stem as I don't want to scratch up the polished airway. About the same, minus Everclear for my personal reasons.

Recently I've seen a couple of posts about cleaning weekly or even daily. Why do this?
I usually smoke only one pipe at a time - right now it's a rusticated Stanwell Canadian - and I smoke it for 6 to 8 weeks before giving it a good cleaning, put it back on the shelf, and grab another victim. A pipe is a piece of wood people; it's kinda hard to screw up.
I clean with a bandana after every smoke.... And a pipe cleaner. About once a week I take out rum and clean all my pipes with that too. Its about bacteria but also buildup Caking can get really bad and ruin a good pipe- you can avoid overreaming your pipes with a proper cleaning regimen.

I could kinda understand weekly cleanings, but I think daily cleanings qualify as "Obsessive Compulsive Disorder" -- or OCD for short -- and there are treatments available. I only clean my pipes when they start giving me trouble.

My cobs I'll smoke a few times before cleaning but my briars and morta I like to keep clean.

...if you are a piper who subscribes to the idea of "cake" in the bowl, then you have more maintenance than those who eschew the "cake" idea... not to mention... why do you want your pipes to look "brand new"? Why polish and fuss?" My body has all kinds of scars... so do my pipes.

I just remove the bowl and pipe cleaner it all out thoroughly, blow air through (because occationally a pipe cleaner sheds) and then with a tissue wipe out the bowl.

Whatever floats your boat. Personally, I prefer my pipes clean. I'm not a fan of rancid stale tobacco oils, nor having what I'm smoking affected by the ghosts of past smokes. Yes, I know it's strange. But stink has never been a plus for me. I remember some years ago when I was in Montreal on business I had occasion to enter an elevator inhabited by five very elegantly dressed gentlemen, none of whom had encountered a shower in memory. Maybe they thought their body odor was a gift to the world, but the combined redolence severely challenged my ability not to violently hurl all over them. Fortunately for international relations, I managed to hold it down until I could exit.
I'm not quite as meticulous as once I was, doing a thorough cleaning at the end of a day's use. I sometimes let it go to the next day. But I have a practice that works for me, that keeps my pipes smoking sweetly, that minimizes the build up of a useless soft crumbly cake, and rarely requires much of a really deep cleaning. I smoke a pipe more than once a day, and occasionally even use more than one blend in it if I'm feeling really lazy. Shameful.
I suppose part of the reason for people's maintenance choices depends on why they smoke a pipe. If all one cares about is getting a good nicotine buzz then who cares if the pipe is as nasty as Typhoid Mary's nether bits. Nicotine passed through a sewer will still do its job.
I am most emphatically not a nicohcolic. I smoke for flavor and I love the flavors I can get from the various blends that I stock. Keeping my pipes in good, clean, working order fulfills that brief. If you prefer smoking oozing pustulent stink, rock on!

Some good points made, sablebrush52, especially about taste.

I don't clean my pipes. I snap my fingers and my wife cleans them for me and puts them back on the rack. . . .

I clean my pipes after every smoke with pipe cleaners. I only dip them in Vodka when I detect some gunkiness in the taste of the tobacco. I keep the cake thin, too. What he said.

Gave my Grabow freehand a deep cleaning on Friday and forgot I did it. The first smoke in it was Brown Bogie. All I can say is, I should have burned a few bowls through it first. It got me!

Caking can get really bad and ruin a good pipe- you can avoid overreaming your pipes with a proper cleaning regimen. Cake is a lot easier to cut when soft, fresh, and thin. Ten seconds with a reamer every few weeks, to keep the cake down, can save you thirty minutes of cursing annually.
