My great-grandfather and grandfather both gave me instruction how to maintain Zippo lighters and keep an extra flint of two in the bottom. I have a couple I've recently replaced the wicks on with actual Zippo brand wicks. The problem is they won't light without four or five strikes. I've been carrying a Zippo for 40 years and never experienced this. Has anybody had any similar problems or have any insight?
Many thanks.

I've replaced Zippo wicks with no problems. It should not take too long for the fluid to penetrate the wick all the way to the top so I don't know why you're having this issue. Lighters don't get much simpler than Zippos. If the issue persists you can always call them in Bradford, Pa. They are very good about honoring the life time guarantee.

My pipe dream on my MM gent & Tom mix, I tinker with things at times, but I have no patience with lighters & matches, if it does not light reliably & isn't refillable , I dump it , my four Kong lighters do the job, OK, & are cheap, but finely engineered old lighters, are a craft form , that is pleasing , each to his own. I have been tinkering , a little with PC' s & tablets for about 25 years, the folly of hobbies as a ham , good folk. I used to walk my old dog Staff , Luc , to the River Promenade whatever the weather, & try and light up my pipe in stormy weather, in the open air on a bench, that is the art, the sailors pipe, practise makes perfect, Keep the powder dry & wick lit ,

I know the newer ones the wadding isn't then same as the older ones as far as quality and amount or it at least seems that way. Or you may have inadvertently gotten the wick bunch up. I'd recheck it. I've carried a Zippo since I was 15 years old but, quit not too long after I started pipe smoking in the 90's(I think)cause the fear of scorching bowl rims. Dynamite proof lighters in my opinion but, not for an anal guy like me to light pipes with. One other thing I've experienced over the years is quality of lighter fluid. If I use Ronson I have problems from time to time but, I find if you use Zippo fluid it works without a hitch. Although sometimes it's hard to find.

Ronson is owned by Zippo so I'm thinking that the two are the same.

So what do they use for the packing? Many years ago I tried using cotton balls to no avail.

Actually Coleman camp stove fluid has been my fuel for a while. $12/gallon. Many thanks.

Coleman camp stove fluid is for Camp Stoves, I do not suggest using it in a Zippo lighter. You use a match to light a stove, not a flint striker. This maybe your problem. And cotton balls I don't believe are dense enough unless you pack them pretty tight. You can send your lighter back to Zippo and they'll repair it for free and I'm sure you'll be more then happy with the results.

Some of my ideas are better than others.

Be thankful you didn't use the old standby of the 50s and 60s Regular leaded gasoline. Back then heard many men say they filled the car and their lighter for 2,00$. I tried gasoline and white gas back in the 70s and 80s. Zippo fuel is better.
Now it is time to find a bowl of mix 79 Then to bed.
