Of all otc's this is the one I have not tried. For reasons beyond me I've not had the angst to try it. How is half and half? Is it good?

Its OK. Not bad, not good. Some love it and for others, it brings back memories.
In my opinion, there's better out there at low prices. My opinion is also that its cheap enough to get a pouch and try it out because my likes are not your likes.

I used to smoke it all the time back in the early eighties. It was my go-to smoke for many years. It doesn't bite and it has a fair amount of nicotine charge for an OTC. It is barely an aromatic; not much topping at all. Don't smoke it much any more, but I do have some in my cellar for when I get in the mood to reminisce.

I bought a pouch of it on the road one time and didn't finish it. The only Half and Half I prefer is the type which goes in coffee. Carter Hall is my favorite OTC of the lot.

Flip side of the coin, I love it. Spicy, sweet even burning with just enough what is that to keep me interested, but not too far out there. Try it, its the odd duck of the otcs where they are all mild mannered this one will kick the door in and rearrange the furniture for you.

He has good taste, me not so much. … When I first started smoking a pipe,1960...It was PA,SWR, Half & Half, Granger, Mixture 79, etc....then by the late 60's I was mostly smoking Lakelands, Matured Virginias, English etc. and pretty much stayed that way until 2012.For whatever reason I began my journey back to the old OTC's and have stayed with those about 2/3 of the time until the present...and will continue to do so. Perhaps its the familiarity or that my taste has changed...regardless, its like I have told other pipe smokers, smoke what you like, and enjoy the journey... |

If you like one burley-forward OTC you'll likely also like the rest.
It will just be a matter of learning which you like most.
So it's worth the cost of a pouch to learn where you rank this one compared to the others.
Of course, the same applies in reverse.
If you DON'T like other burley-forward OTC's, chances are high you won't like this one either.
So if you don't like the others, don't waste your money on this one.

Ok, the rare morning bowl will be had tomorrow, and it will be Half & Half. They stopped deer tongue decades ago but they are using a mix of flavorings to mimic the flavor profile of deer tongue. To my tastes they are pretty close to matching the flavor of the original blend from American tobacco company. I've seen pinkerton pouches and tubs online and passed because it isnt close to the same blend. Once stg took over it has returned to a better taste. Bear in mind I'm regurgitating what I've read, the Pinkerton blend went away when I was in high school and the atc blend went away when I was a twinkle or maybe an infant. I've smoked the atc blend but have avoided the pinkerton version based on th le reviews. |

Its not bad,in fact its met my expectations and then some. Its got a nice cran-Burley pouch note to it, and an unexpected breadyness to it when smoked. I felt as though if there was a tobacco of choice in the last supper it would be half and half. Not sure why I added that last part but it feels appropriate.

This is a blend that requires some degree of cadence to smoke it properly, but when done right it smokes true. My assessment of the blend came up short the first few times around the horn, but on 3rd bowl I picked up on it and was awarded a good smooth smoke.

I like it, but that's just me. A few weeks ago, was over at the Mother-in-law to help her out, and she called my wife stating how good my pipe tobacco smelled, and that I must smoke the "Good Stuff"...it was Pinkertons Half & Half.

If half and half were marketed under G.L Pease it'd sell for quite a bit more. The Scandinavian tobacco group did well on this blend.

I mistakenly called it corriander in another thread, but it is absolutely cardamom. I opened a tub and recognized the smell but couldn't place it. I went to my spice cabinet and smelled every spice until I found it. The smell is much stronger than the taste. It almost makes me gag a little sometimes when I open the tub, but I enjoy smoking it a bit. It's a good working in the yard, mowing the lawn, mindless no frills smoke (when I finish the tub, I'm going to get a tub of Carter Hall, though. I like it more for a mindless smoke.  |
