In another forum, Wayne Teipen revealed that he uses unflavored gelatin, water, and activated charcoal. He jokes about using flavored gelatin for a line of fruity pipes!

I have received a couple Savinelli, Rossi and a few high end professionally refurbished pipes with a coating and notice no difference personally between those and bare bowls. Others don’t care for it. All my Cayuga’s come with as mentioned earlier a “miracle cake” this coating I have had Flake off on one, the rest no issues. Everything I have researched is it is suppose to help with building cake or eliminate the Briar “taste” of a new pipe. I don’t know what any coatings are made of particularly the Cayuga’s. It’s a well guarded secret, when I ask Dan, the owner of Paul’s who makes Cayuga’s he just smiles and says something his dad (Paul) came up with. I did see where they oil cure them (another Cayuga process that VERY few companies do anymore) and again it’s not a formula he shares openly. I am sure some of the old time club members may know but no one is talking. I’ve only been a member there for a few months so I don’t foresee getting any info, if any, for a long time and even then wouldn’t share it. So that’s a long ramble to say “I don’t know”.

I've appreciated your long ramble.

I use my mixture of pipe mud on all my new Cobs, it most definitely helps with the proper cake build up much faster and more even. In the past I’d burn a hole thru the softer MM Legend pipes, the last two I purchased a few years back I coated with pipe mud and they are both in use when smoking a Lakeland blend. So, I’ve come to the realization that pipe mud works best for me👌👍👍

Oil curing is a series of secrets because the trial and error to make it work is brutal.
Seems like a carbon coating would be easy to develop, and therefore not all that valuable as a secret

I never noticed any difference between new pre-carbed pipes and non pre-carbed... they all broke in the same.

I'm assuming the dye is non-toxic. I've learned a lot today. Cheers people. Just got an email back from Savinelli, they just use a carbon powder inner coating. Not dye
