I purchased a Savinelli Gaius 320KS smooth pipe, and found that it is set up for a 9mm filter, and a 9mm balsa wood filter comes with. Wow, great! In fact, I have replaced some of the other 9mm filters in my other pipes with the balsa filter replacements that came with this pipe.
The traditional 9mm filters, Big Ben and Mr. Brog to name a few, IMO suppress air flow a bit too much. This balsa filter is perfect.

If you have a Michael’s nearby you can purchase balsa wood at a reasonable price and cut your own filters to size. Works well for me.

I get two uses then I dispose the balsa filter. Balsa is fairly inexpensive @ Michael’s so a fresh balsa filter I cut is always handy. Every pipe smoker has their own method that works best for them. It’s trail and error, no right or wrong. Ron’s way of drying the balsa works best for him, next time I’m going to give it a try and dry a filter or two.

I bought some to try in my mm pipes. Restricted the draw a little too much for me. I'll shave a bit of each side and see how that works.

The Savinelli 9 mm balsa filter is not triangular in cross section. It it is round with deep deep grooves, so the cross section looks like a fat spider or something.
